The best-selling author of Enigma and Fatherland turns to today's Vatican in a ripped-from-the-headlines novel and gives us his most ambitious, pause-resisting thriller yet - where the power of God is nearly equaled by the ambition of men.

The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, 118 cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next 72 hours, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on earth.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Roy McMillan takes full advantage of the opportunity to display his range. While not strictly miraculous, his transformation of Cardinal Lomeli, the protagonist, from dispirited to Spirit-filled is most certainly charismatic.... McMillan's performance is a triumph, as is the book itself." (AudioFile)

I have read a number of Harris’s books. I was surprised by the topic of this book. Most of Harris’s books have been about either Ancient Rome or World War II. This book is about the catholic church selecting a new pope.

The book kept me reading until two a.m.; then I started reading again as soon as wakened. The book is well written and researched. I find I enjoy the way Harris writes and his beautiful prose. Most of Harris’s books have a theme about the inevitable corrupting effects of power; this book is no exception. The book is about the current times as the last part of the book definitely reveals. Harris is a master storyteller. I am looking forward to reading more of his books. I highly recommend this book.

The book is just over eight hours. Roy McMillan does an excellent job narrating the book. I enjoyed listening to his voice. McMillian is an actor and audiobook narrator.

Extraordinary

The plot was brilliantly conceived but was too "neat" in the way all the puzzle pieces fell together at the end. A surprise ending is more successful if looking back at the story, it could be anticipated. In this case, the ending came from left field.

Narration was excellent though the dropped volume at times made it difficult to catch all words.

Excellent Concept Weak Execution

Some may find this slow at first, but I was fascinated.

The twist at the end was well done. Highly recommend it.

What a twist

This book is brilliant, as are all novels written by the highly-talented Robert Harris. "Conclave" possesses an excellent story, accurate/realistic narration, and a gripping theme. The reader is able to identify with the main character - Progressing through the story and following the timeline of the election of one of the most powerful leaders in the world.

For someone who does not have religious tendencies, I was very impressed with this title - And look forward to Harris's next creation.

Excellent Read, Highly Recommend!

I am a huge fan of historical fiction, which is first how I was introduced to Robert Harris, in the Cicero trilogy. When I came across Conclave, I was interested because of the author, but skeptical because it is set in the near future and because of the reviews regarding the ending. I am so glad that my skepticism gave way to my curiosity. The writing was simply brilliant. The characters had depth, the descriptions of the Vatican were detailed and the storyline was filled with twists. Unlike many of the reviewers, I did not find the ending unbelievable. I would agree that it was completely unexpected. I laughed aloud when I realized what had happened. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the reader. I would enthusiastically recommend the book to anyone who is interested in intrigue.

Brilliant and captivating!

This was one of those rare audiobooks I could not stop listening. In the car, in the kitchen, in the shower - I was absolutely enthralled by the complexity of the characters and the perfection of the narrator's voice. I may start it again later today, which I never do.

An Excellent Book with a Fantastic Narrator

Emotional, brilliant, surprising, satisfying. In the rare company of The Source and Pillars of the Earth.

Riveting

Not the twist I imagined - maybe a bit of a stretch (no pun). The performance was really good - an easy listen..
ONE THING - (other than the twist) - anyone else hear a high pitch ringing every couple minutes - almost like a very high pitch chime?
.. I just thought I was getting tinnitus from all my audible listening, but when I listened for the second time on speaker - the chime was definitely present..

Solid and Unexpected

What a beautiful and thrilling story of The Conclave and its characters. A must read in an age of absolution.
