From a bestselling author, a "hauntingly original, impossibly clever and devilishly daring" thriller in which Scarpetta receives a message from beyond the grave…(Chris Whitaker, author of All the Colors of the Dark)

Autopsies can reveal the secrets of the dead.

And this victim is sending Scarpetta a message...

Summoned to an abandoned theme park to retrieve a body, Dr. Kay Scarpetta is devastated to learn that the victim is a man she once had an intense love affair with.

The murder scene is bizarre, with a crop circle of petals around the body, and Giordano’s skin is strangely red. Scarpetta’s niece Lucy believes he was dropped from an unidentified flying craft. Scarpetta knows an autopsy can reveal the dead’s secrets, but she is shocked to find her friend seems to have deliberately left her a clue.

As the investigators are torn between suspicions of otherworldly forces, and of Giordano himself, Scarpetta detects an explanation closer to home that, in her mind, is far more evil...

I think Kay Scarpetta's books are all interesting. This one is no exception. January LaVoy brings the characters to life for me.

I know Scarpetta’s sister is *supposed* to be annoying but January LaVoy’s vocal portrayal of her was so jaw-clenchingly grating that I had to stop listening to her and listen to some Scott Brick narration to relax at bedtime.

The story resolution seemed implausible.
Maybe I just listened to it on a bad day.

I have been a Patricia Cornwall fan since I heard her speak decades ago at an FBI associates convention in Atlanta. I remain a loyal fan but this book isn’t one of my favorites.

The narrator’s annoying portrayal of Scarpetta’s sister

Story was very good and reader is same one from women’s murder club. Has a feel like those books which I really like.

This is my first Cornwall novel and I am hooked.

Decent story, made better by the person telling the story. Once in a while, I’d get lost due to so many characters.

Like the narrator

I like January Lavoy as the narrator. She is good. She should narrate all of the Scarpettas series.

The narrator

Lots of science with several very evil characters. The usual group of friends and family who solve the mystery and catch the evil doers

An exciting Scarpetta novel

All those 5 star reviews?
I’ll admit this one was a tad different thank God but it was not her best.
I do like where the characters have gone after all these years.
I actually liked this narrator better than some of the others
Good but not great. A little bit back on track which I do like!

Really

The twists and turns in plot are masterful and I am glad to see her old writing style is back. Cary’s nasty plans are so tricky I could not figure them out and understand them or how Lucy outsmarted her . Although Moreno drives me nuts I’m glad he is back but Kaye’s character remains true to form and handles everybody with her usual patient understanding. Great ending!

Intelligent blending of UFO history, space exploration, and classic Cornwell mystery
