A riveting drama of marital therapy.

Gretchen and Steve have been married for a long time. Living in San Francisco, recently separated, with two children and demanding jobs, they’ve started going to a marriage counselor. Unfolding over the course of 10 months and taking place entirely in the marriage counselor’s office, John Jay Osborn’s Listen to the Marriage is the story of a fractured couple in a moment of crisis, and of the person who tries to get them to see each other again.

A searing look at the obstacles we put in our own way, as well as the forces that drive us apart (and those that bring us together), Listen to the Marriage is a poignant exploration of marriage - heartbreaking and tender.

Editor's Pick

An emotional character study for voyeurs
"Gabra Zackman’s narration put me right in this session with Steven, Gretchen, and their marriage counselor, Sandy—so much so that it almost felt like eavesdropping on all of the intimate details of their lives. I’ve never encountered a story that made me feel so much like a fly on the wall. It’s a captivating exploration of love, marriage, and figuring out (and then holding onto) the most important things in your life."

I feel like It is my wife and I. Except no one has cheated to my knowledge. The struggles, A conversation, the way they interact. It makes you look at your marriage in a different way. Thank you John.

Extremely real.

this is some of the most incredible storycrafting i can recall, and the outsider's POV is one of my favorite techniques. plus, Zackman's narration and voicing were just the right level of identifiable without being overly theatrical. i zoomed through this in barely over a day, and have to force myself to wait and let the story settle before i listen again to look for the finer details. this definitely bears a reread/relisten.

this is a great book to listen to you! I guess that's why it's called listen to our marriage. I don't think I can sit down and read this but listening to it wasn't bad because there's a lot of he-said she-said but the narrator does a great job!

great book to listen to you!

When I came across this wonderful novel I was actually looking for a self help book on listening, my first thought was...It's a novel, I don't read novels? With struggles in my own marriage I was drawn for some reason to listen. I often forgot I was listening to a novel as there was so much to glean from this masterpiece. This novel is so well written, the perfect balance of thought interjection from the therapist. John Jay Osborn captured so many realities of married life. I was so sorry when it came to it's end.

A must listen!
