A bittersweet love story told in four phone conversations, starring Minnie Driver and Billy Crudup.

Julia Fletcher takes her job seriously. Even as she’s planning to leave her post as the U.K.’s Minister of Loneliness, a government role designed to address the emotional epidemic plaguing modern citizens, Julia is invested in her successor, choosing to conduct the interviews herself. When an internet rabbit hole leads her to Henry Hall, a writer and iconoclastic, beloved professor at New York University, Julia’s interest is piqued. Henry is an unlikely choice: an academic located an ocean away from the Minister’s office in London, but Julia sees something in his writings that makes him a standout candidate in her eyes.

During a series of unorthodox, thought-provoking phone interviews, Julia asks Henry tough, philosophical questions aimed to get at deep truths. And Henry doesn’t hold back, displaying a vulnerability neither of them were expecting, even getting Julia to open up as well. Within their deep and winding conversations, the two of them quickly develop a comedic language all their own, the kind of which is usually reserved for life-long friends or soulmates. Well into middle age and at inflection points in their careers, both Henry and Julia are contemplating life, legacy, what it’s all for. Whom it’s all for. Soon, Henry has answered all of Julia’s questions and is left with one, burning question for her: Why is she leaving this job she’s clearly so passionate about? It’s the one question Julia isn’t ready to answer.

Lines are blurred—personal, professional. Circumstances and emotions get complicated. And somehow, two people acutely acquainted with loneliness form an unshakable connection.

I am not sure where to begin. What a wonderful concept! Great performances by Minnie Driver and Billy Crudup. They made this book extra special.
The frankness and honesty is enviable.
I fear I do not have the eloquence to which this deserves. It is more than worth a read.

Great dialogue

I loved the premise, the interview calls, however unlikely it was to have multiple interviews for a high level position with only one person. I really liked the characters and their stories of everyday life, over coming challenges, sadness, loneliness and family struggles - very relatable. finally I loved how their relationship developed over just a few phone calls and how the book ended definitely left me feeling good about their prospects for the future. I would definitely read/ listen to more.

Unique story, left me wanting more

I’ve been a fan of Matt Boren’s writing since before “Folded Notes from High School”, and have always loved his work. But this was next level. In Minister of Loneliness Matt tapped into something different this time. Something deeper. Something so resonant and true and of this exact time. This very exact moment. It was so from the heart but never trite. Henry and Julia were so incredibly relatable. It’s as if Matt listened to my inner thoughts and doubts and hopes and fears, and managed to articulate it all into a conversation of meaning. I want to literally gift this book to the lonely people in my life. To the ones who are wrapped up in political dread, in apocalyptic hopelessness, in clinical depression, in whatever, and tell them to lose themselves in it so that we can not feel so alone, together. The sharing of this beautiful story can become our jazz in a thanksgiving blizzard (listen and you’ll know what I mean). I’m putting this story next to ones like “Fup” by Jim Dodge that have become go-tos for me when times are tough, when I’m feeling out of sorts, and when I find myself in need of my own minister of loneliness. You’ll be glad you listened!

A meaningful conversation we should all listen in on
