This program is read by Michael J. Fox.

A moving account of resilience, hope, fear and mortality, and how these things resonate in our lives, by actor and advocate Michael J. Fox.

The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson’s advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the world’s leading non-profit funder of PD science. His two previous best-selling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.

In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, aging, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox’s trademark sense of humor, his audiobook provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves, and our losses.

Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, that included his daily negotiations with the Parkinson’s disease he’s had since 1991, and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery. His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and “get out of the lemonade business altogether.”

Does he make it all of the way back? Listen to the audiobook.

I have been a long time fan of Michael J Fox. My Favorite movie in the whole world is “Back to the Future” and I named my son “Marty” in 1988. This book was fantastic. Such an inspiration to me. I struggle with my own daily health issues and nothing like what Michael faces. I love the realism he shares of his struggles but yet he somehow gets through it all. I love how his family has been there to support him.
I would recommend this book to everyone!!
Attitude is Everything which is hard when your in chronic pain on a daily basis which I suffer with myself. This book makes me see how much I have to be grateful for and how I have to see it on a daily basis. Live for today!
Thank You Micheal for sharing this.
You can not possibly know how much your words touch others and encourage others. Maybe that is God’s plan for you!

I have Juvenile Parkinson's, it attacks tens and younger; until recently there was no genetic proof and no one believed me. Validity. Acceptance. Awareness. And a lot of self love I am walking away with thanks to Michael! It's not going to be an easy road, there's a lot more faith in my heart. I feel human, like me again, and, there's no thanking him enough! Got PD? It's a MUST read! <3

And that is just one of the several excellent quotes from the MJF book - "four legged son" also hit home. This one is worthy of your time, truly appreciated the effort he put into being the narrator, which made the book for me. What a dude, A+ Mr. Fox!

Since my teen years, many moons ago, I've remained a huge fan of Michael J Fox. This book reveals an insight to this stage of his life. Although heartbreaking at times, he remains positive and steadfast! A welcome addition to my MJF book collection. Losing both of my grandmothers with PD, I share in the goal of finding a cure and help with living with PD.
With much love and respect,
Mary Jo B

Having listened to and poured over the entire Michael J. Fox book collection:

"Lucky Man: A Memoir" (2007)

"A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Future… Twists and Turns And Learned Lessons" (2010)

"Always Looking Up The Adventures Of An Incurable Optimist" (2013)

"No Time Like The Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality" (2020)

As Michael himself says in this collection over the course of the journey he is definitely an optimist; however he is definitely a realistic optimist. This is not a collection of glossy Hollywood stories with bubbly "look at me" anecdotes. To the contrary, it is a real life story (told over the course of 4 volumes)

Yes, there are a few famous names which pop up in the book from time to time, however it's in no way to be "showy" these people just happen to be Mr. Fox's true friends.

Michael writes lovingly about his family, how they've, yes, been very supportive of him of course; further however, he is very proud of what his children have accomplished in their own right as individuals.

The respect he has for all those people who have personally assisted him in his life and supported his humanitarian cause is constantly woven and rewoven beautifully throughout this continuous story of a life which is being lived with passion, conviction, empathetic diligence for humanity, and yes as he himself says realistic optimism.

His 30+ year marriage to his wife Tracy has been filled with Hollywood success, but even better their actual lives have been filled with tests of redemptive successes which has assisted not only Michael in his journey but the journeys of so many untold people around the world; through their starting of and continuing work with the Michael J. Fox foundation!

Obviously, I would recommend these books and really Michael's own powerful telling of his own life's journey and mission is made all the better because you hear it all in his passionate yet dignified, sometimes witty, sometimes carefully measured melancholy narration. Michael J. Fox - his past, present, and Future!
