Two teens must learn the "art of killing" in this Printz Honor-winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times best-selling Unwind Dystology series.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: Humanity has conquered all those things and has even conquered death. Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life - and they are commanded to do so in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe - a role that neither wants. These teens must master the "art" of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award-winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price.

Loved it however I was not satisfied as much with the ending as I wanted to be, maybe that was the point. Looking foward to the sequel.

Well Written Novel

This was my very first Neal Shusterman novel and I was blown away. The story immediately drags you into the world of Citra and Rowan, gripping you tighter and tighter until the novel is suddenly over and you're left begging for more. If you like YA dystopian novels which delve into the ethics of human life and advancing itself for the greater good, this book is perfect for you. The characters are well-developed and fully thought out, with even minor characters having a backstory which drives their actions. The world itself is the most intriguing part of the book for me. There are so many nooks and crannies to the society that affect the story line but so clearly have whole histories themselves that I just need to delve into more. Thankfully this appears to be the first in a new series, and I will absolutely be pre-ordering the next one!

As for the narration, Greg Tremblay has easily become one of my favorite narrators thanks to this performance. While it does sound a little silly when he voices a 9 year old girl, I never found any of his voices odd or jarring. His narration contributes to the story and makes it feel even more intense and alive.

Great Story, Great Narration

Not a world I want to live in but a very interesting story. Some of the scenes with mass death are a bit tough to read, but still a great book.
