The first novel based on the thrilling Paramount+ TV series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds!

When an experimental shuttlecraft fails, Captain Christopher Pike suspects a mechanical malfunction—only to discover the very principles on which Starfleet bases its technology have simply stopped functioning. He and his crewmates are forced to abandon ship in a dangerous maneuver that scatters their party across the strangest new world they’ve ever encountered.

First Officer Una finds herself fighting to survive an untamed wilderness where dangers lurk at every turn. Young cadet Nyota Uhura struggles in a volcanic wasteland where things are not as they seem. Science Officer Spock is missing altogether. And Pike gets the chance to fulfill a childhood dream: to live the life of a cowboy in a world where the tools of the 23rd century are of no use.

Yet even in the saddle, Pike is still very much a starship captain, with all the responsibilities that entails. Setting out to find his crewmates, he encounters a surprising face from his past—and discovers that one people’s utopia might be someone else’s purgatory. He must lead an exodus—or risk a calamity of galactic proportions that even the Starship Enterprise is powerless to stop....

This is a very well crafted story even if you took out all the Star Trek characters plus references and in there place made up random characters like another random space opera it would still be excellent. One of the best Trek novels I've ever listened to you should definitely check it out if your considering it, it starts out ok and gets better and better as it goes.

Fantastic

I was in the mood for a light listen and I found a light listen that was very well executed with a complex story line that resolved well in the end. The reader was excellent with great differentiation between characters. This is a solid addition to the Star Trek canon and it would be a good listen even if you don't know the characters ahead of time. Well done!

I admit: I was surprised I liked this as well as I did

And I think that's about all you need to know. If you enjoy the show, this well written novel is like an episode straight from the first season. I found the characters consistent with the show, the story is very Star Trek, and the pacing is that of a novel. Everything I want in a Star Trek book.

It's Strange New Worlds!

The Star Trek series, no matter which one you choose, always ends up being a great read, listen, or viewing opportunity. Star Trek continues to show humanity and great problem solving. Not just a story but the dilemmas that individuals face both big and small or planetside or in space. This was enjoyable all the way around.

Always a great listen

the story fealt just like another episode of strange new worlds, and the narrator did a pretty good job imitating the characters voices!

I loved the setting for this - I could just see it in my mind. The voice acting matches the characters really well too.

Fun read!

Writing stories for a cherished franchise is probably pretty challenging. Writing stories that will stand out (in a good way vs the opposite) against a whole libraries worth of books by previous authors must truly be daunting.

This book, first in a series of stories regaling us with the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and crew of that most famous of science fiction's star ships is certainly a great start to what will hopefully be an equally great series.

No spoilers but the set up/conflict was novel and the challenges presented to the characters engaging. Really good world building here.

The characters were written very well for the most part with cues obviously taken from the new show.
"for the most part" with the exception of the main protagonist Pike himself. He is the standout figure in the show (for obvious reasons) because really he is the model Star Fleet officer. Indeed, as an old former Army NCO I would stand by the assertion that he is a fine example for officers of any service to follow, fictitious or otherwise.

He takes his responsibility over his crew (and by extension of his personality) those he leads or who have entrusted themselves into his care very seriously. So it is odd that in the story he had repeatedly put those people at risk time and again because of his deference to an individual from his past.
This figures prominently as a primary challenge of the storyline that must be overcome. Which feels a bit contrived because of Pike's odd behavior in this regard.

That part aside this was a wonderful story full of adventure and problem solving and the characters acted in the finest traditions of Star Fleet where violence was never a first option for consideration and only used when there was no other recourse. Let's also hear it for how each member of the crew made meaningful and even critical contributions to the story.

The narration was wonderful as well which helped keep the action alive in the mind of the listener.

I hope we get more like this in the future because the bar has certainly been set high with this book.

A Great Start

It did start a little slow, but the story developed well and kept my interest. They circled back to all of the characters giving a great conclusion for the interactions.

Another exciting story
