The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuang’s acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect.

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.

Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

Featured Article: The Best Audiobook Series of All Time by Genre

What makes a good audiobook series? There are as many answers to this question as there are listeners. For some, it might be epic battles. For others, it might be ongoing romantic twists and tensions. For still others, it might be elongated character studies or an in-depth analysis of a particular time and place. But the universal element of a truly great series is that it sticks with you long after the last word. These are our favorites from every major genre.

Compelling Trilogy • Emotional Rollercoaster • Complex Characters • Unpredictable Twists • Rich Worldbuilding

I couldn't stop listening! Zeller is an outstanding narrator and Kuang knocked it out of the park with this final installment.

breathtaking

The third book In the series, with more battles, revelations and an angry powerful woman. I enjoyed this book as much as the other two and was both surprised, excited & disappointed in the ending- it was beautiful in other words. Good for those who like war & superhuman powers, set in a ‘Victorian’ age parallel Asia.

Book 3 in the series did not disappoint

R.F. Kuang has never spared our feelings to the detriment of the story that needed to be told and this book was no exception. The way the book and series unfolded in the last 1/3 of the book. Stories were intentionally left unfinished because life doesn’t wait to end until a character’s arc has been completed and Kuang’s story continues to imitate the realities and harshness of life. But don’t forget that even when it may look bleak, she never leaves us without a thread of hope. And for that thread of hope I will always read her works.

Just Beautifully Painful

This book is the best in the series it’s like each book was getting better and better (started out great as well)

If you don’t like realistic endings though I’d steer clear of this whole series because it’s a war and there is no plot armor for anyone you will be sad and disgusted and disappointed and also happy and hopeful and feel complete.

RF KUANG has simply continued to impress me over and over again!

A good ending to a great series

I like to a fantasy that deals with the grit of PTSD and substance abuse and orphans. the failings of warlords to donate craft. every element felt realistic. lots of unanswered questions, but the end was unexpected.

Third act of this trilogy is by far my favorite. There was never a point where I felt like I knew how it was going to end and I do put a lot of merit into that. Action sequences were spot on, dialogue was very fluid, and Rin, great tortoise what a badass! Can't say this would be for everyone but it is certainly a unique work of art that I fell in love with. It was also great to see Kuang really come into her own as a writer throughout this trilogy. Really excited to see what she has planned next! Oh the narrator kicked ass too.

Surprised at how much I enjoyed this

Amazing

I don't think I've ever wanted a main character to die so much. I appreciated the theater, the magic system, but I hated the main character.

Not my favorite
