As a Gilmore Girls fan, I downloaded Tony Award-winning actress Kelly Bishop’s memoir because I was curious to know about her time on the Gilmore Girls set. What I instead listened to, and fell in love with, was a beautiful story of resilience, grief, love, and the importance of staying true to yourself. From insights into her upbringing, to her marriages, falling in love with dance, and originating the role of Sheila in A Chorus Line, listeners learn about the best (and worst) moments of Bishop’s often-remarkable life ( Gilmore Girls included). Her narration was delightfully intimate, and made me feel like I was sitting back and recounting memories with a friend. Kelly Bishop is an amazing narrator, phenomenal actress, and extraordinary person. I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to listen to her story. Despite the title's name, the actress does not define herself by one single TV show. She shares a plethora of life experiences and looks at the past through a lense of gratitude. I have the utmost respect for Kelly Bishop as a human. This memoir was a treat!

I went into this book naively thinking that it would be mostly about Kelly Bishop’s time playing Emily Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, but it included so much more and was delightful! I’m a huge GG fan and getting to know about the woman behind one of the most iconic characters on the show was positively fantastic. I absolutely loved learning about all the interesting things she’s experienced while also crying at so many parts, the heart-wrenching and nostalgic show moments. I’ve gone through it fully twice now, and I highly, highly recommend!

As a millennial, I knew Kelly Bishop as Emily Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, which, of course, was the role I primarily associated her with. I loved learning more about her start in ballet and her long career in theater before she joined the world of TV. Her anecdotes and life lessons are so entertaining and full of emotion. Many of her stories made me smile, laugh, or even tear up. What a great life—and maybe, after all, there are quite a few parallels between Kelly and Emily. I highly recommend!

Kelly Bishop has long been an actress I’ve loved and admired since discovering the original cast album of A Chorus Line in high school. In fact, that’s what prompted me to give Gilmore Girls a try, which I also love.

Her memoir is a refreshing read. Despite setbacks, Bishop tells it not with a caustic bitterness that Sheila or Emily would, but with a nonchalance, one of someone who recognizes that you have to take the good with the bad and it’s better to find the good and the hope in all scenarios and that manifesting that is frequently the way to go.

While I do wish she would have spoken a little more about her chorus days between childhood and A Chorus Line, it’s a tremendously wonderful read.
