Now a major new series on Disney+ starring Andrew Garfield

A provocative look at the twisted roots of American fundamentalism.' Will Self, Evening Standard Books of the Year

‘Excellent . . . a lucid, judicious, even sympathetic account not just of Mormon Fundamentalism but of the seductive power of fanaticism in general.’ Daily Telegraph

‘Remarkable . . . for anyone interested in the wilder frontiers of spiritual conviction, this book is a must.’ Independent

Brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty insist they were commanded to kill by God. In Under The Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer's investigation is a meticulously researched, bone-chilling narrative of polygamy, savage violence and unyielding faith: an incisive look inside isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities in America, this gripping work of non-fiction illuminates an otherwise confounding realm of human behaviour.

I loved learning something new in a story, not just raw facts. It was both compelling and scary at the same time

how desperate peopke can cling to something even if it is far fetched

In the spirit of the book - I’m an atheist.

Great read to get a better understanding of yet another horrible religion that tries to control people through fear of eternal damnation and social exclusion. Rape and incest is a build in part of the terror and fear regime. But, in the end, is mormonship any different from any other religion on this front? Like any other religion the LDS has changed due to public opinion (to stay relevant and alive) but also here it is similar to any other religion that has changed words/meaning over time. It is just very interesting to study Mormonship as it is such a new and big religion (est 1820). Crazy world where people are so desperate to need a blanket of support in order to function.

Horrible history like any other ‘religion’
