GLENDALE, Ariz. - Glendale police are searching for the driver of an SUV involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that left a 38-year-old bicyclist dead early July 6.

Investigators say video evidence captured what they believe is the suspect vehicle — a silver or light-colored Chevrolet Traverse — fleeing the scene near 71st and Grand avenues. Officers are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver and locating the vehicle.

According to the Glendale Police Department, the collision occurred at approximately 2:22 a.m. just southeast of the intersection. Responding officers located the 38-year-old male victim, who died of his injuries at the scene.

Police believe the suspect vehicle is a 2018 to 2023 model Chevy Traverse that likely sustained moderate damage to its front grill, bumper or both during the collision.

Anyone with information regarding the crash, the driver or the whereabouts of the Chevrolet Traverse is urged to contact the Glendale Police Department at 623-930-3000.

PHOENIX - Two men are in custody after an early morning armed robbery at a Phoenix motel on Saturday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded around 2:30 a.m. to a robbery call at the motel near Interstate 17 and Indian School Road after a woman reported that two men had stolen money from her. When the victim tried to retrieve her cash, one of the men pulled a gun and pointed it at her.

Investigators reviewed surveillance cameras in the area and quickly spotted two suspects matching the woman's description at the very same Red Roof Inn along the Black Canyon access road. Officers detained the first suspect — who was sitting outside one of the motel rooms — and found a handgun nearby, which was later determined to be a replica.

Police then started speaking with the people inside the room through a closed door, eventually persuading the second suspect to step outside and surrender.

Both men are being booked into custody. Police confirmed the victim was not physically injured during the robbery.

Investigators have not yet released the identities of the suspects. They did not specify how much money was stolen.

PHOENIX - Record to near-record-setting temperatures are moving across Arizona as a dome of high pressure centers over the state through Friday and Saturday. As a result, temperatures will climb to their pinnacle over the next several days. Humidity levels have dropped for much of the state, limiting storm potential.

Instead of an active monsoon day, isolated storm chances are expected for the higher elevations of northern Arizona, with scattered chances for far eastern and southeastern Arizona. A few stronger storms may still produce strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning.

The forecast high will reach 116 degrees in Phoenix on Saturday, which meets a current record of 116 degrees, set in 1972. Sunday may break the record with a forecast of 115 degrees against a current record of 114 degrees set in 2025.

All of southern, central, and western Arizona are under extreme heat warnings. For far southern Arizona, the warning will expire on Sunday evening. In central and western Arizona, many locations remain under a warning until Monday evening. In northern Arizona, many regional canyons and areas below 4,000 feet in Yavapai and Northern Gila counties will go under the extreme heat warning beginning Friday morning and lasting until Sunday evening. The Grand Canyon, below 4,000 feet, is also under the extreme heat warning through Sunday. An extreme heat advisory is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening for Northeastern Arizona.

Storms will be limited to the far eastern and southeastern portions of the state in the coming days. Between Sunday and Monday, humidity levels will begin to climb across the state, and storm potential may increase for the higher terrain as well as eastern and southern Arizona. Phoenix will see a return of storm chances by Tuesday evening, with the best chance appearing to arrive around Wednesday. Higher humidity will also gradually lower the forecast high in Phoenix, with expected highs of 113 degrees on Monday, 111 degrees on Tuesday, and 108 degrees by Wednesday.

The American Red Cross' tips for heavy rain situations and flood safety:

Preparing for a severe thunderstorm 

The American Red Cross' tips for preparing for a severe thunderstorm:

• Put together an emergency kit.
• Know your community’s evacuation plan.
• Create a household disaster plan and practice it.
• Purchase a battery-powered or hand-crank radio
• Discuss thunderstorm safety with members of your household. Be aware that a thunderstorm could produce flooding.
• Pick a safe place in your home for household members to gather during a thunderstorm. This should be a place where there are no windows, skylights, or glass doors, which could be broken by strong winds or hail and cause damage or injury.

Be prepared and stay safe during the monsoon

"Most Valley residents know how quickly and furiously storms can move in and out, bringing strong winds, dust, rain, and flash flooding. These storms can cause interruptions in services, such as water, power, and gas," stated Captain Ashley Losch of the Glendale Fire Department.

GFD reminds residents of ways they can be prepared and stay safe:

• Have flashlights with extra batteries on hand.
• Have food that can be prepared without the need for cooking or refrigeration.
• Have at least one gallon of clean water for each person in the household.
• Have backup power for anyone requiring power for a medical device.
• Have backup power for cell phones that do not require charging.
• Have a first aid kit ready and accessible.
• Never drive into areas with flowing water; it takes less than 10 inches to wash a car away.
• Avoid flooded areas, such as washes.
• If waters are rising, seek higher ground.
• Do not approach downed power lines, the ground can be energized for up to 200 feet.
• Keep pets indoors during storms.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Savannah Guthrie, the host of the "Today" show, has issued a new plea for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, exactly six months after she disappeared from her Tucson-area home.

Savannah posted to Instagram on the morning of Aug. 1, saying that since her 84-year-old mother was taken from her bed in the middle of the night, the family has been in "agony and despair."

"…our hearts are in ruins. Cam and Kristine, Annie and Tommy, Mike and me - we spend every waking moment thinking of her, longing for her, looking for her. There is a hole inside us that can never be filled. There is an ache that cannot be softened. And there is a determination in us that cannot be quenched - to find out what happened to her, so that we can give her the dignity of a proper goodbye - a celebration of her remarkable life that she so deserves," part of the post read.

As the family continues to search for answers, she is pleading for someone to come forward with information that may know something. Savannah shared that they're still grieving, but are turning to prayers and the kindness of others to continue moving forward.

"We are begging for help. We are desperate. We need someone to come forward. Someone knows something. Someone suspects something. Someone recognizes the writing in the ransom demand notes. Someone has noticed something different, strange, troubling or just unusual - perhaps with someone they deeply love," read a portion of the post. 

Sheriff Chris Nanos with the Pima County Sheriff's Department shared an update in the case on Aug. 1, telling the community that the case is still active. He said the sheriff's department has done a lot of work, but still has a lot of work ahead, including working with DNA in labs across America, and forensics. 

The sheriff added that his relationship with the FBI "is a good relationship, it's always been a good relationship," and that they are actively reviewing tens of thousands of tips coming in.

He reiterated that the Guthrie family "is not and have not been suspects in this investigation," saying they are instead victims of the crime. 

On July 31, the sheriff's department released the contents of the two ransom notes sent to a local Tucson television station on Feb. 2 and Feb. 6. The sheriff said he hopes that "releasing the actual note, that we will get some response from the community."  

The first note claims Guthrie is "safe but scared," outlining a plan to hold her for ransom. The demand starts at $4 million, increasing to $6 million over a week. The writer claims Nancy will die if no money is sent, adding her life is in the family’s hands.

The first ransom note read:

Hello Savannah,

We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared. She will be held for ransom and once payment is received she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of 7 days. You will need to send bitcoin in the amount of $4 million USD before 5PM on Thursday the 5th. If payment is not received, the ransom will be increased to 6 million USD which will need to be paid by 5PM on Monday the 9th. Once payment is received to the bitcoin address below she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson. If payment is not [received] by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5PM, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out, there will be no negotiation. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.

She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed.

The second note read:

Guthrie Family,

We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31 when she was dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home. She was reported missing the following day by family members after she failed to show up at church.

On July 27, Savannah released a video where she pleaded for Nancy's return.

Since the disappearance, PCSD and the FBI have released footage of Nancy's alleged abductor at her doorstep. In their statement on July 31, officials with PCSD said the two videos that were recovered from Nancy's doorbell cameras "may be from two separate days."

"They indicate he took steps to prepare for the event on the night of January 31 to February 1," read a portion of the statement.

Also on July 31, the two men who were detained early in the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigation are now seeking millions from the PCSD, claiming they were unlawfully arrested at gunpoint and held for hours.

Detectives are continuing to pursue every investigation and technological lead, including re-examining the doorbell camera videos.

MARICOPA, Ariz. - An investigation is underway after two people were found dead in a house fire on Saturday morning. 

The Maricopa Fire/Medical Department and Maricopa Police responded to the fire near Honeycutt Road and North Porter Road in Maricopa at around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 1. 

Inside, two people were found dead.

The fire department's arson investigator and police are investigating the cause of the fire.

Officials did not release the victims' identities. It is unclear what started the fire or if anyone else was involved.

SURPRISE, Ariz. - An 11-day-old baby boy abducted from Surprise was safely recovered in northern Arizona on Saturday after law enforcement officers intercepted a suspect vehicle near Winslow.

The swift recovery brought a high-stakes search across county lines to a safe conclusion after the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office received a statewide Attempt to Locate (ATL) alert, coordinating with state troopers to locate the infant unharmed nearly 200 miles away from home.

According to sheriff's officials, deputies in Navajo County were put on high alert following the newborn's abduction from the West Valley community. Shortly after receiving the vehicle description, officers spotted the suspect's car traveling near Winslow and conducted a stop to safely secure the child.

The infant was immediately transported to a local medical facility as a precautionary measure to ensure his health and safety. Authorities confirmed the baby is currently awaiting an emotional reunification with his mother.

"We appreciate the assistance of Arizona DPS and are grateful this incident had a safe outcome," deputies said.

Officials have not identified any potential suspects or detailed any formal charges yet.

PHOENIX - Officials and family members are searching for answers in an unsolved homicide case from April 1998. 

The homicide occurred 28 years ago at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the courtyard of an apartment complex at 9th Avenue and McKinley, located just south of Roosevelt. The victim, Raul Aguilar, was 23 years old at the time of his death and would be 51 years old today. Aguilar also went by the street name "Droopy."

Investigators are treating the case as a cold case, hoping someone will recognize his picture, remember details about him, or connect with his nickname.

Detective Mike Fischer and Aguilar's daughter, Rocio, discussed what was stolen from her family and what the past 28 years have been like. Rocio, who was very young when her father died, explained how she discovered the truth about her parentage.

"I was only 5 years old. I didn’t find out that he was my biological father until 3 or 4 years ago. So having that spiritual connection to my dad, honestly, when I found him, was like taking on the responsibility of just the eldest daughter in general. And I absolutely knew that it was my duty to bring his name back into the room. And I took on so many of his personality traits that I’m surprised that people are surprised that I’m doing this," Rocio said." My mother had a very loving relationship with him. It did not work out for the better. My life, though, still has been extremely incomplete, and I am determined to find whoever did this to my father."

When asked how jarring or difficult it was to learn about her father just a few years ago, Rocio shared how the discovery impacted her.

"It was extremely difficult, but it all made sense, especially with just who I am and where I come from. And I knew that I belonged to a family. And I know there’s plenty of stories like this, but it happened for a reason. And although my father had passed, he knew me. He met me once or twice as an infant and as a 5-year-old, and that left a mark on my heart and that’s what I carry now," Rocio said.

Rocio also explained why it is crucial for her to advocate for her father's case.

"There’s so many people that just go into a file and the names are just names, especially Chicano and Native American, missing and murdered Indigenous people in general. We go unseen. And I took that responsibility on being his only alive daughter," Rocio said.

Fischer urged anyone with information about the case or who remembers Aguilar to come forward immediately, regardless of how much time has passed, by contacting Silent Witness at 480-948-6377.

"Any information you have, give it to us. We’ll pass it on to the detective that’s assigned to the case. And hopefully we can bring closure to Rocio," Fischer said.

Even if members of the public believe information was known back then, a new detective may be assigned to the case today, and getting information highlighted again could connect critical dots years later.

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. - A six-hour, multi-agency standoff in a Bullhead City neighborhood ended without an arrest after authorities determined a wanted homicide suspect was not inside the home, despite "credible" tipsters initially claiming he was hiding there.

Officers and SWAT units swarmed a residence on Monterey Drive searching for 32-year-old Christopher Lamar Pratt, who is wanted on an active felony warrant for murder.  Bullhead City police confirmed Pratt remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Tactical teams from the Bullhead City Police Department, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office and Lake Havasu City SWAT established a perimeter and cut power to the residence around 2:40 p.m. Throughout the evening, officers pulled five people out of the main house with help from the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) and GIITEM (State Gang Task Force).

Authorities systematically searched the main house, an adjacent mobile home and multiple RVs parked on the lot. SWAT units fully cleared the property and confirmed the suspect was not present.

"We are still on scene. However, we have confirmation that he is not at this location," Bullhead City PD spokesperson Emily Fromelt said at 8:30 p.m. "He is still outstanding."

Bullhead City Police Chief Paul George issued a statement after the dust settled Thursday morning.

"Our officers exhausted every reasonable effort to safely call out and have all occupants exit the home. While some individuals complied quickly, others did not," George said. "Given the information available and the belief that an armed homicide suspect remained inside, we had a duty to take the necessary steps to safely gain visibility into the residence and protect both our officers and the public."

For nearly six hours, crisis negotiators made announcements in an attempt to contact Pratt, and tear gas was deployed multiple times. SWAT team members ultimately entered the residence, but Pratt was not located.

"We will always operate within the law and follow accepted law enforcement practices, but let me be clear, we will relentlessly pursue those who commit violent crimes in our community. This investigation is far from over. We will continue to pursue every lead until he is in custody. If you choose to harbor or assist a violent fugitive, you should expect that we will come knocking. We will not sit back and wait for him to hurt anyone else," added Chief George. 
 

Pratt is wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on July 18 along Sea Spray Drive. A 43-year-old Mohave Valley man was shot while sitting as a passenger in a vehicle, suffering a gunshot wound that injured both his legs. The victim was transported to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, where he died four days later. Detectives identified Pratt as the gunman and noted he had prior altercations with the victim.

A reward of up to $1,500 is being offered by Mohave Silent Witness for information leading to Pratt's arrest. Anyone who spots the suspect is instructed not to approach him and to call 911 immediately. Tipsters can also contact the Bullhead City PD at 928-763-1999 or Mohave Silent Witness at 928-753-1234.

Bullhead City Police took Pratt into custody late at night on July 31 after receiving information that the homicide suspect was at a home in the 7800 block of Canadian Street in Mohave Valley.

Chandler officers are searching for Justin Dubberke, who was last in contact with police on Feb. 1. 

Dubberke was taken to a hospital on Jan. 31 after he was found near Price Road and Willis Road and could not identify himself, his whereabouts or the year. On Feb. 1 at around 2;30 p.m., officers responded to the same location to find him slumped over in the back of a vehicle, appearing disoriented. He left southwest, through the parking lot and was gone before authorities arrived at the scene.

Dubberke had not returned to the location to get his vehicle, credit cards, phone and clothes, as of Feb. 8.

"Due to Justin's last known mental state and having no personal belongings, he is being considered missing and endangered."

On Feb. 6, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office asked for the public's help in locating 16-year-old Annelise Angeles who was last seen at her Goodyear home on October 30, 2025. She is described as 5' 3" tall, 120 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Guthrie is described as a white woman, 5-foot-5, and 150 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Officials do not know what she was last seen wearing.

Navajo Police are searching for 67-year-old Aaron Mark Bradley, who was last seen at the Shonto Market in Shonto on Sept. 26, 2025. 

Bradley was last seen wearing a black shirt, wrangler jeans and white sneakers. He is described as an American Indian man, weighing 140 pounds and standing 5 feet 7 inches tall. Police say he has a feather tattoo with the names Kim, Kayla, and Karen on his left arm, and an angel tattoo with the name Kelly on his chest.

Anyone with information on Bradley's whereabouts is asked to immediately call 911.

PAGE, Ariz. - A tragic boating accident at Lake Powell claimed the life of a child Thursday afternoon after they fell overboard and were struck by the boat, authorities said.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which occurred within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and prompted a swift multi-agency emergency response to save the young victim.

Deputies were dispatched to the lake around noon on July 30 following reports of a severe watercraft accident. According to initial investigators, the child fell from the bow of a moving boat while out on the water and was then struck by the same vessel.

National Park Service Rangers were the first to arrive on the scene, providing emergency medical care to the child before transporting them by water to Antelope Point Marina. There, rangers met with first responders from the City of Page Fire Department.

Intermountain Health Air Medical then airlifted the young patient from the marina to Page Hospital, where healthcare providers made desperate attempts to treat the severe injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts, the child passed away. 

 Authorities have not released the identity, age or gender of the victim, and officials noted that no further information is currently available as the investigation remains active.

PHOENIX - Republican gubernatorial nominee Rep. Andy Biggs has announced a former state senator as his nominee for Lieutenant Governor.

In a July 31 news release, Biggs announced his selection of Sine Kerr, a Buckeye dairy farmer and former Arizona Senate Majority Whip. Kerr most recently served in a post with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency as the state executive director for Arizona.

The 2026 Election will be the first with an Arizona Lieutenant Governor. Currently, Arizona does not have a Lieutenant Governor. In the event a governor cannot carry out their duties, the Secretary of State steps in.

In June 2026, we reported that a number of the state’s governors took the office without being elected.

"We had had every form of trigger of the line of succession. From impeachment, to someone passing away, to being indicted, to resigning to become another, like the Department of Homeland Security chief like Jan Napolitano," State Sen. J.D. Mesnard said.

For the first time in state history, Arizona is joining 45 other states by creating the office of lieutenant governor after voters approved the change in 2022. Like the vice president, the lieutenant governor will be next in line to lead the state should the incumbent die, resign, or be removed from office.

Before this announcement, Kerr served in the Trump administration as Arizona's executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency. Prior to that role, she served as a state senator, and she is currently a dairy farmer in Buckeye.

Biggs says about 70 or more people were vying for the job of lieutenant governor.

Political consultant Stan Barnes says a lieutenant governor pick is not likely to sway many voters, but the wrong choice could hurt a campaign. He says Kerr's background as a dairy farmer, along with her work on water policy in the legislature, could give Biggs an edge with more rural voters.

Kerr says the work of introducing herself to Arizona voters begins.

"We start tomorrow. Bright and early, we will be up in Flagstaff. What I love to do is be with the people, so I'll go anywhere along with Andy Biggs, and we are going to blanket the state and let the people know that we really care," Kerr said.

However, political consultant Stan Barnes with Copper State Consulting says one major question still remains: What powers will the lieutenant governor actually have?

It will be up to whoever is elected governor to determine the role that the lieutenant governor plays, which could include running a state department or helping lobby for votes. Biggs says he chose Kerr for her leadership and expertise.

While Arizona went more than a century without a lieutenant governor, Barnes says voters ultimately decided it was time for a change.

"The importance here is that the lieutenant governor is the same party as the governor and in our original Arizona constitution that was not always the case. The Secretary of State was sometimes a different party than the governor," Barnes said. "She is a rural Buckeye person, and you never know, but the rural vote in Arizona, which is not the largest part of the vote, could actually turn the election one way or the other."

Biggs' opponent, incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, has not announced her pick, but that didn't stop her campaign from releasing the following fiery statement on Kerr's selection: "All you need to know about Sine Kerr is that she is so extreme she agreed to be the running mate of Andy Biggs—a Washington insider who sided with a corrupt pedophile cult, shielded sex traffickers, covered for Jeffrey Epstein, stood with the powerful and well-connected, and backed policies that raise grocery and gas costs for Arizona families."

PHOENIX - A pregnant woman and her newborn infant have died following a two-vehicle collision in north Phoenix late Saturday night, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on June 20 near Loop 101 and 19th Avenue. According to police, a car carrying the woman entered the intersection against a red light and slammed into an oncoming vehicle traveling eastbound on Beardsley Road.

Paramedics rushed the woman, who was in critical condition, to a nearby hospital where doctors delivered her baby. Neither the mother nor the infant survived, authorities said. The woman was later identified as 19-year-old Leila Kiani Potts.

The man driving the woman's car was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver of the second vehicle was not hurt and stayed at the scene to cooperate with investigators. Police said he showed no signs of intoxication.

Police did not say if the alleged red-light runner will be charged with a crime.

PHOENIX - A late-night brawl outside an Irish pub in north Phoenix has left one man fighting for his life and several others in police custody, authorities said Sunday.

The June 21 incident, which remains under active investigation, also involved the damage of a Waymo autonomous vehicle.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to the Dubliner Irish Pub near 40th Street and Thunderbird Road at approximately 2:04 a.m. following reports of a fight. When police arrived at the scene, they quickly detained multiple adults.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to treat the injured. One man was taken to a local hospital suffering from life-threatening injuries.

While investigators are still trying to piece together what sparked the violent confrontation, police confirmed that a Waymo self-driving vehicle became part of the crime scene. At some point during the brawl, a person was inside the Waymo, causing significant damage to the vehicle.

Footage captured at the scene Sunday morning showed a Phoenix police technician dusting a Waymo vehicle for fingerprints. The autonomous car suffered a shattered window during the incident.

Police have not yet released the identities of those detained or the condition of the man who was hospitalized.

PHOENIX - A group of quick-thinking bystanders pulled a man from a Phoenix canal late Saturday night after he fell into the water, authorities said.

Phoenix fire and police personnel responded to the area near 29th Avenue and Dunlap Road just after 11:15 p.m. following reports of a drowning.

When they arrived, emergency crews discovered that witnesses had already intervened and successfully pulled the man out of the canal, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. The victim had been underwater for an unknown amount of time.

Fire crews immediately initiated life-saving measures at the scene. The man was then rushed to a local hospital in "extremely critical condition," fire officials said.

Despite the initial severity of his condition, a Phoenix Police Department spokesperson later confirmed that the man is expected to survive.

The investigation into how the man ended up in the water is ongoing and has been turned over to the Phoenix Police Department.

MESA, Ariz. - A routine traffic stop in Mesa led police to thousands of dollars in cash and a massive drug bust involving methamphetamine, fentanyl and heroin, authorities said.

Mesa Police arrested 24-year-old Jesus Octavio Lopez-Lopez on Wednesday after detectives pulled him over around 7:30 p.m. near the 200 block of South Dobson Road. Lopez-Lopez is now facing multiple felony charges, including possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs for sale and money laundering.

According to police, detectives initially observed Lopez-Lopez commit multiple traffic violations before pulling him over July 29. During the stop, Lopez-Lopez consented to a search of his vehicle, while a Mesa Police narcotics K-9 conducted an open-air sniff and alerted to the presence of drugs. Inside the car, officers discovered cash alongside individual packages of suspected methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl powder, indicating the narcotics were prepared for sale.

Information gathered during the traffic stop allowed detectives to secure a search warrant for Lopez-Lopez's home, where investigators uncovered additional illegal drugs, sales paraphernalia and cash. In total, police seized 1,518 grams of methamphetamine — more than three pounds — along with 96 grams of fentanyl, 15 grams of heroin and $5,733 in U.S. currency.

Lopez-Lopez was booked into jail, where he remained Friday on a $25,000. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Aug. 5.

PHOENIX - A man crashed his car into a tree stump and fence on Friday afternoon, the Phoenix Police Department said.

The July 31 solo crash happened around 3 p.m. near 7th Avenue and Broadway Road.

"The single vehicle for unknown reasons veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree stump and fence.  The adult male driver has been transported with life threatening injuries," said Mercedes Fortune with the Phoenix Police Department. "Preliminary information indicates the driver may have suffered a medical emergency prior to collision."

The driver is expected to survive his injuries. He was not identified.

MAYER, Ariz. - A convicted felon brandishing a samurai sword alongside a Yavapai County highway was arrested after startled drivers alerted law enforcement, authorities said Friday.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the scene along State Route 69 in Mayer after reports of a man "swinging" the traditional Japanese weapon near passing traffic on July 24.

When troopers arrived, they successfully contacted the suspect and found a full-sized samurai sword accompanied by a large sheath. The man was disarmed and taken into custody without further drama or injury.

Upon further investigation, troopers discovered the suspect was a convicted felon, legally prohibiting him from possessing dangerous weapons. He was booked into custody for disorderly conduct involving weapons, as well as an active, outstanding warrant.

"Safety isn’t a movie stunt," troopers said after the arrest. "If you see something dangerous, call 911 and let trained professionals handle it."

Troopers added, "We can’t make this stuff up."

State police did not release the suspect's name, and they did not say what charges he's facing on the previous warrant.

PHOENIX - Sheriffs in Pima County have released the contents of ransom notes that were sent in the aftermath of Nancy Guthrie's disappearance from her Tucson home.

84-year-old Guthrie was last seen on the evening of Jan 31 when she was dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home. She was reported missing the following day by family members after she failed to show up at church.

On July 27, Nancy's daughter, NBC Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, released a video where she pleaded for Nancy's return.

Since Nancy's disappearance, PCSD and the FBI have released footage of Nancy's alleged abductor at her doorstep. In their statement on July 31, officials with PCSD said the two video that were recovered from Nancy's doorbell cameras "may be from two separate days."

"They indicate he took steps to prepare for the event on the night of January 31 to February 1," read a portion of the statement.

The notes were sent to Tucson television KOLD. The station received the notes on Feb. 2 and 6, which is also when Savannah started posting videos with her siblings on Instagram, addressing the kidnappers.

The first note claims Guthrie is "safe but scared," outlining a plan to hold her for ransom. The demand starts at $4 million, increasing to $6 million over a week. The writer claims Nancy will die if no money is sent, adding her life is in the family’s hands.

The first ransom note reads:

Hello Savannah,

We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared. She will be held for ransom and once payment is received she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of 7 days. You will need to send bitcoin in the amount of $4 million USD before 5PM on Thursday the 5th. If payment is not received, the ransom will be increased to 6 million USD which will need to be paid by 5PM on Monday the 9th. Once payment is received to the bitcoin address below she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson. If payment is not [received] by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5PM, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out, there will be no negotiation. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.

She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed.

The second note reads:

Guthrie Family,

We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.

Investigators believe the way the notes are written could provide clues about who wrote them. They hope their release could help the public identify the person responsible.

Expert weighs in

"It kind of pressures on the heartstrings of the relatives, the family members, especially Savannah," said Retired Police Chief Jeff Halstead.

Halstead, a former commander with Phoenix Police, says specific details point to the notes being legitimate, like a mention of Nancy’s white smart watch.

"If this was received before anyone stated anything publicly relative to the investigation that Nancy had on a smartwatch… that is very highly credible and highly relevant to being directed by the suspects," Halstead said.

Halstead says the tone shifts drastically in the second note, received four days later. The urgency disappears as the writer admits Nancy died soon after being taken. They apologize, claiming they did not "fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition," telling the family nothing they did would have changed the outcome.

"So it's almost like they ended their case of trying to get specific dollars amounts and timelines. And now they're putting in a closing statement that whoops we didn't know she was this sick, she has passed. We buried her and we are so sorry," Halstead stated.

Investigators have not confirmed these notes are actually from Nancy’s kidnappers, but Halstead believes the suspects were solely focused on a payday.

"They didn't think she was going to die. But they also thought they were going to be very wealthy after this and I think they're just closing this and leaving it on, and they want to move on in life," Halstead added.

Anyone who knows anything about the person who may have written these notes or the case is asked to call the FBI. Investigators say it’s never too late to come forward. Callers can remain anonymous. The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward.

PHOENIX - A major decision on the future of Arizona’s water supply is getting closer, and the state could be facing deep cuts.

After months of failed negotiations between states, the federal government has unveiled a framework that calls for mandatory water reductions across the Lower Basin states.

The proposal released on July 31 by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says Arizona, California and Nevada could face collective cuts up to 3 million acre-feet through 2036, which is about enough water to serve more than 25 million people a year, the Associated Press reports.

These cuts do not mean the tap will run dry tomorrow, but they could lead to changes to where water comes from and how much it costs.

The plan would also allow annual releases between 5 million and 12 million acre-feet from Lake Powell.

Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming are temporarily spared from facing mandatory water cuts.

Governor Hobbs' statement on proposed water cuts

"Today, the federal government released a broad range of alternatives for how the Colorado River will be managed over the next ten years. Within that range is the opportunity for the federal government to adopt the commonsense, compromise proposal put forward by Lower Basin States for 2027 and 2028. Our proposal is one of the largest conservation programs in Colorado River history and builds on Arizona’s decades-long commitment to responsible water stewardship. While this FEIS still contains unacceptable options that include the federal government forcing Arizona to take the majority of draconian water cutbacks, implementing the Lower Basin agreement would protect Arizona from massive water cuts, distribute reductions more fairly across the Lower Basin States, and provide stability and protection to the water supply that our communities rely upon.

As the federal government finalizes their operating plans for 2027 and 2028, my administration will be working around the clock advocating for an approach that protects the stability of the system, distributes water reductions equitably, and ensures water security for all Colorado River water users. I remain steadfast in my commitment to a long-term Colorado River solution that ensures every state in the system shares in its conservation.

Arizona provides the agricultural produce, critical minerals, weapons defense systems and cutting-edge semiconductors that feed America, protect America and fuel America’s high-tech economy. No other state in the Colorado River basin can say the same. 'They could surprise us'

"The federal government is telling us in this plan that they think we need in the lower basin up to 3 million acre feet in reductions in demand in order to keep the system working properly," said Cynthia Campbell, ASU’s Director of Policy Innovation for the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative.

However, the exact extent of the cuts and how they will be split remains unclear.

"I would say we definitely do not have overall stability or clarity on what happens in the medium-range future of the Colorado River," Campbell said.

Instead of a long-term deal, the federal government plans to issue short-term, two-year plans unless the basin states can finally agree. Lower Basin states previously offered a 20% cut, but they could face more.

"I expect that the bureau of reclamation is going to try and incorporate that lower basin proposal as much as it can make that its plan, but we haven’t seen the plan yet. So theoretically, right now they could surprise us," said Sarah Porter, ASU Kyl Center for Water Policy Director.

Because of Arizona's junior water rights on the river, those cuts would hit the state harder than California or Nevada, which have senior rights. Adding to the friction, the proposed plan leaves the Upper Basin states off the hook.

"There is nothing in the federal plan which is compelling the upper basin states – Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico – to do anything in terms of conserving water," Campbell said.

Arizona has been preparing for water cuts for years, but we could still feel the impacts.

"I don’t expect to get a call from my water provider telling me to stop using water. I do expect that there will be more push than ever for people to find ways to reduce their water use permanently, and I expect that water rates are going to go up all over central Arizona because cities are now having to make investments in supplies to make up for what they’re expecting on the Colorado River," Porter said.

For now, it remains a waiting game to see just how severe the final cuts will be. Experts say specific numbers could arrive as early as next week as officials monitor the decision and its impact on Arizona.

Two men detained early in the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigation are collectively seeking millions of dollars from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, claiming they were unlawfully arrested at gunpoint and held for hours. 

The notice of claim, which is the precursor to a potential lawsuit, was filed Monday in Pima County.

Lawyers for Carlos Alfredo Palazuelos, Daniel Maddox and Maddox’s mother Josefina Maddox say police arrested Palazuelos at gunpoint and wrongfully identified him as a "person of interest" in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, only to let him go hours later. 

The claim also states that men in military gear pointed guns at Daniel Maddox and made him lie on the floor of his home, handcuffed him, then held him outside under a guard for several hours while they allegedly ransacked his mother’s home. Lawyers say investigators caused significant damage when they searched the home. 

In the notice, attorneys said they’re willing to settle Palazuelos’ claim for $2.5 million, Daniel Maddox’s claim for $500,000 and Josephina Maddox’s claim for $250,000.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to comment.

What happened to Nancy Guthrie? 

Guthrie, 84, was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31 when she was dropped off at her Catalina Foothills home. She was reported missing the following day by family members after she failed to show up at church.

On July 27, Savannah Guthrie released a video pleading for her mother’s return.

Early in the investigation, police released footage of Nancy's alleged abductor at her doorstep. In a statement on July 31, PCSD said the two videos recovered from Nancy's doorbell cameras "may be from two separate days."

"They indicate he took steps to prepare for the event on the night of January 31 to February 1," the statement reads. 

Ransom notes released 

On Friday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released the contents of two ransom notes that were sent to Tucson area television station KOLD. Investigators said the first note was received on Feb. 2, and the second note was received on Feb. 6.

Both ransom notes were sent by e-mail, with the subject line of "News Tip." However, the name, e-mail address and date of birth for the person who sent it were redacted from the version released by PCSD.

The first one reads: 

Hello Savannah,

We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared. She will be held for ransom and once payment is received she will be released unharmed. We will be holding her for a maximum of 7 days. You will need to send bitcoin in the amount of $4 million USD before 5PM on Thursday the 5th. If payment is not received, the ransom will be increased to 6 million USD which will need to be paid by 5PM on Monday the 9th. Once payment is received to the bitcoin address below she will be released within 12 hours of deposit to a safe drop off location back in Tucson. If payment is not [received] by the last deadline on Monday the 9th at 5PM, she will be killed. Your mother is aware of this and her life is in your hands. It is in the best interest of everyone to have this completed as soon as possible. You will not be able to contact me from here on out, there will be no negotiation. Do not play games, law enforcement will not be able to help you.

She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed.

The second ransom note reads:

Guthrie Family,

We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related. She is buried in nature now. Nothing you could have done could have changed the outcome. We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry.

Officials with PCSD say "these communications reveal distinctive patterns of word choice, syntax, and phraseology that reflect the writer’s unique linguistic style. They also provide valuable insight into the person’s mindset, motives, and the evolution of their tone over time."

"As with the unidentified male depicted in the video, we believe these distinctive linguistic characteristics may be recognizable to someone who knows or has interacted with the notes’ writer. A friend, family member, coworker, classmate, or acquaintance may recognize these patterns of expression and possess information that could help identify the individual responsible."

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Running a donut shop is a grind – as one worker noted, "Early is an understatement. We start at 11, 12 at night."

It's a grind Daniel Tes does not take for granted.

"The people, the creativity," Tes said. "Creating donuts and coming up with different flavors fulfills that creative spark."

He opened The Local Donut in Scottsdale about 10 years ago.

"The best. Blueberry, you got to get the blueberry," an unnamed customer said.

But this summer's slow season turned things from sweet to sour.

"A lot of small businesses deal with it, but this year was different," Tes said. "We felt the pressure after spring training to get things ready for summer, and we just couldn't catch up. Last week was probably our worst. We couldn't make payroll."

So he turned to social media, sharing the shop's challenges and asking for help.

"I kind of had to humble myself and ask for help from the community, ask for help from God," Tes said.

And the community showed up, packing the place the next day. Other small businesses even pre-paid for unassuming customers.

"There's a lot of selfless people out there, a lot of generous people," Tes said.

Their regulars are relieved the doors are staying open.

"They've got a lot of great options as well as super friendly people, so it's a great time to come in here real quick for a donut," said Harris Dozier, a regular customer at the donut shop.

And Daniel is ready to keep serving donuts and the community.

"People are there to help out, and I definitely want to pay it forward as well too," Tes said.

PHOENIX - A 26-year-old Phoenix man is behind bars after court documents reveal he allegedly held a high-school girl against her will, beat her with a glass bottle dozens of times and got her pregnant when she was just 16 years old.

David Jorge Ruvalcaba was arrested Thursday afternoon at his north Phoenix apartment complex near Cave Creek Road. He faces multiple felony charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, strangulation, sexual conduct with a minor and resisting arrest.

According to court records, the investigation began on July 27 when police responded to Banner Thunderbird Hospital regarding a 17-year-old victim receiving medical treatment. A forensic nurse exam documented over 50 injuries across her face, arms, back and legs, alongside clear signs of strangulation. The victim told detectives that during a nearly 12-hour ordeal spanning July 25 and July 26, Ruvalcaba struck her 50 to 60 times with a glass alcohol bottle and choked her until she lost consciousness multiple times inside his home.

Court records detail a timeline dating back to January 2025, when the victim was 15 years old and enrolled in 10th grade. Investigators say Ruvalcaba, who is roughly a decade older than the victim, entered into a relationship with her after meeting through mutual friends. The victim lived with Ruvalcaba for about a year, during which she reported ongoing sexual abuse, an unwanted pregnancy that resulted in an abortion in May 2026, and recorded phone calls where Ruvalcaba made controlling and coercive statements.

"He told her he was already in love with her, so he might as well keep her," police said. "She was basically a housewife at this time."

Officers with the Black Mountain Precinct’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team tracked Ruvalcaba to his home on July 30. Police initially tried to lure him outside by knocking on his door and claiming someone had struck his truck in the parking lot. A plainclothes officer reported hearing the distinct sound of a gun being racked inside the apartment during a second attempt. Ruvalcaba later stepped outside, spotted uniformed officers wearing police vests and allegedly fled back up a staircase into his unit. Officers pursued him inside, took him into custody and recovered a handgun found near the suspect.

Ruvalcaba was booked into a Maricopa County jail, where he remains in custody on a $250,000 bond as he awaits his next court appearance on Aug. 6.
