Beyond the stat sheets, the heart of the Milwaukee Brewers is fueled by culture, family and passion.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, FOX6 News went behind the scenes with three distinct Latino voices bound by one shared love for the game. Three words summarize their drive: pride, family and gratitude. It represents one shared purpose across the Brewers organization.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android

Latino roots
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
For outfielder Luis Lara, his heritage is about bringing his full identity to the field: "I feel that every single Latino on this team represents our culture to the absolute highest degree."

Luis Lara

Assistant pitching coach Juan Sandoval sees his position as part of a larger historical continuum: "So many big names have paved the way for us. Continuing that representation is a legacy for me."

And for director of experiential marketing Izzy Lugo, it comes down to authenticity. He explained he is "trying to stay true to our roots and show what being a Latino means to everybody."

Beyond the ballpark
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Local perspective"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
That passion extends beyond the ballpark and their shared love for the game. For Lara, that drive started long before he put on a professional uniform, training alongside his uncle back in Venezuela.

"Baseball is truly a lifestyle for me. It's all I've known since I can remember, and it's the gift God gave me," Lara said. "I always work hard for my family, and to hold my country and my community high."

Juan Sandoval

Before moving into coaching, Sandoval remembers his humble beginnings with the sport back in the Dominican Republic. "My mom tells me she gave me plastic bats when I was 5 or 6 (years old). Baseball was everywhere in the Dominican Republic – in the streets, in schools, wherever you went," Sandoval said. Driven by gratitude, he brings that lifelong passion to the dugout today. "With this group of coaches and players, it really is a special team."

Lugo's passion stems from representation. From South Side murals to ballpark celebrations, he uses his platform to make sure Latino fans see themselves in the Brewers.

"Being 100% Puerto Rican, I very much am true to my roots," Lugo said. "It's all about family being able to lean into that as much as possible, inspire our Latino fan base to think bigger."

Izzy Lugo

<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What's next"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
While they all play a distinct role with the organization, their shared love for the game makes the team and the community stronger.

"Watch out for Milwaukee, we're coming for it all," Lara said.

FOX6 News translated quotes from the subjects of this story from Spanish to English. It came in a beat-up Amazon box from a person she does not know. An initial DNR report in mid-August estimated "as many as 100" deer had died from EHD. At that time, DNR deer herd health specialist Erin Larson said the outbreak was considered larger than normal.

The average outbreak typically sees 30 to 50 deer deaths, according to the DNR. The highest number of deer deaths in a single Wisconsin county is estimated at 226, when the DNR tracked a seven-county outbreak in southeast Wisconsin in 2019.

What is EHD?
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Dig deeper"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, is a virus that impacts white-tailed deer and other hoofed animals, according to the Wisconsin DNR. The disease is most often fatal and usually kills the animal within a week of infection.

When the disease regularly occurs in a deer herd population, death rates are lower, typically killing less than 25% of the deer population. However, in areas like Wisconsin, where the disease is less common, death rates are usually higher, and high-density herds will suffer higher fatality rates.

EHD is transmitted by biting flies, usually midges, so the disease is typically most prevalent when the fly population is most abundant, in late summer and fall. The virus cannot last long outside the insect or its host.
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Clinical Signs" custom="true"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Symptoms of the infection in deer vary depending on what stage of the disease the deer are in and how long they have been infected. Potential signs of infection include:

A lack of fear of humans

Excessive salivation

Foam present around the nose (sometimes with blood)

Look weak despite having a good body condition

Appear to have parts of the body swollen (usually the head and neck)

The deer will also often appear near water sources, as they head there to try to combat their high fevers and dehydration.

Can people, pets get EHD?
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Why you should care"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
The disease does not pose a risk to humans. Humans cannot contract the virus by handling infected deer, eating venison, or being bitten by infected insects. It also does not impact common household pets, such as cats and dogs, according to Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Will EHD affect the deer hunt?
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="Local perspective"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
The 2026 deer season will occur as outlined in the current regulations and without any reductions to harvest opportunities, the DNR said Sept. 22. Given the history of deer harvest and current population size, the affected areas can still support an antlerless harvest. While some area may experience high mortality from the disease, populations rebound quickly.

Reporting sick or deceased deer
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What you can do"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
If you spot a deer carcass or a deer that appears sick, you can report this to the Wisconsin DNR by emailing the agency at DNRWildlifeSwitchboard@wisconsin.gov or by calling 608-2267-0866. Is this the government culture of new Berlin?" said Janan Najeeb, executive director of the Milwaukee Muslim Women's Coalition.

"There's no place for hate. The mayor's comments have been extremely disappointing. I voted for him as long as he's been here and never known he had this much hate," said Mohammad Fareed, a Muslim New Berlin resident.

SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News

FOX6 News asked Common Council members if they plan to have another meeting where this matter will be revisited and folks will get a direct answer, but FOX6 News was told they are not commenting at this time nor sharing any details spoken during closed session. It's always between zero and whatever the plaintiff, or the claimant, is looking for. And this was decided as a reasonable settlement to put the matter behind us," McBride said.

SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News

Previous fatal shootings
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="The backstory"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
In 2015, Mensah shot and killed 29-year-old Antonio Gonzales after police said Gonzales was drunk and carrying a sword, which he refused to drop despite officer's commands.

A little more than a year later, Mensah shot and killed 25-year-old Jay Anderson Jr. in a city park. Mensah told officers he saw Anderson, who had been sleeping in his car, reach for a gun in the passenger seat.

Then, in February 2020, police responded to Mayfair Mall after a reported domestic disturbance, in which someone saw a teen carrying a gun in his bag. Eventually, security guards and police chased after the teen, who was later identified as 17-year-old Alvin Cole. Mensah told police he saw Cole point his gun at him and opened fire, killing him.

The three people fatally shot by Officer Joseph Mensah

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office declined to charge Mensah in every case.
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Kimberley Motley has represented the Anderson and Cole families. She told FOX6 Tuesday she wasn't surprised Mensah sought this compensation.

"Based on our experience and just life and being a human being, certainly being involved in three shootings within a five-year time period as the only Wauwatosa officer to do that, certainly, I think everyone can agree, it would be unsurprising if that person did not have any type of mental health issues," Motley said.

The families of all three sought compensation through federal use of force lawsuits. In May, the parties reached a settlement in the Cole case. After a judge dismissed the Anderson case, Motley said she's still waiting on a decision to their appeal.

She said it's sad the families have had to pursue justice through the legal system while the city pays Mensah.

McBride distanced what happened from this claim in an interview after Tuesday's meeting.

"Whatever happened in 2020 or earlier, that's actually a different matter. So, although I understand the feelings of the Cole family, it's really an unrelated matter at this point," McBride said.

FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android

New employment
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="The backstory"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
When Mensah left the department in November 2020, the city agreed to pay him up to $125,000 in lieu of employment as part of the separation agreement.

But a short time later, Mensah began working with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office, where he worked until he resigned in July 2025. His resignation letter said he intended to leave the business.

It's unclear if Mensah has attorneys representing him on the worker's compensation claim or the duty disability claim he's filed with the state.

State law enables first responders working for the state or municipal agencies to pursue the claim if they meet certain criteria. The employee must have been working the job when the disability happened, and the disability has to be work-related and permanent. The applicant also has to prove they missed out on future promotions, jobs, or was forced to light duty or retire because of it.

Applicants must seek a pair of medical opinions before submitting the duty disability claim. City staff told FOX6 that the process is still ongoing.

Duty disability applications are first sent to the state's Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF). If the department approves a claim, it pays the wage replacement benefit right away. If it's denied, it then goes to a state Department of Workforce Development division to assign a hearing.
<fts-yahoo-source format="html" text="
Information in this post comes from the Wauwatosa Common Council and extensive prior reporting.
" title="The Source"></fts-yahoo-source>

Both candidates for Wisconsin governor are laying out proposals to lower costs and hitting the other on this issue.

David Crowley's plan
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Democrat David Crowley spoke at Gee's Clippers in Milwaukee. He laid out what he calls the Badger Basics Plan. It includes allowing anyone who wants the option to join BadgerCare, the state's version of Medicare. He said premium costs will be on a sliding scale based on our income. Crowley wouldn't say how much it would cost, but that he will work with the legislature to make sure people get the healthcare they need.

"Wisconsin seniors and families, they simply cannot afford Tom Tiffany to be governor of Wisconsin, because at the end of the day, Wisconsin seniors deserve a healthcare system where getting the medicine their doctor prescribes doesn’t mean sacrificing their groceries, sacrificing their utilities, or other necessities," said Crowley.

SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News

Tom Tiffany's plan
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What they're saying"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
Republican Tom Tiffany campaigned Monday at the Hot House Tavern in Menomonee Falls. So, there is a much better way to go about this. I’ve laid out a full policy agenda in regards to this. It starts with: let’s stop closing our base-load sources of power. Those sources of power that are on almost 24 hours a day. We’ve got to make sure that we keep them on. They’ve been retired here over the last number of years. And we’re feeling that impact," said Tiffany.

Looking ahead to the election
<fts-yahoo-subheader subheader="What's next"></fts-yahoo-subheader>
The high-stakes Election Day is now just five weeks away.
