We Are Their Voice.

About us

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal welfare organization established in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. The organization’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in three key areas: protecting and rescuing animals from crisis, assisting animals in communities and advancing legal protection for animals. The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a full-service animal hospital, spay/neuter clinic, rehabilitation center for canine victims of cruelty, kitten nursery and adoption facility. In addition, the ASPCA announced a groundbreaking anti-cruelty partnership with the New York Police Department in 2013, which has resulted in a record-breaking number of arrests and animals’ lives saved. The ASPCA also operates programs and services that extend nationwide, including a Field Investigation and Response team that rescues animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, a fully-subsidized spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles, a Behavioral Rehabilitation Center for fearful, under-socialized dogs, and a 24-hour, 365-day Animal Poison Control Center that provides pet owners and veterinarians with live, on-call assistance related to toxic products and substances. In 2015, the ASPCA acquired Humane Alliance, the nation’s leading training and education organization focusing on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by more than 2 million animal advocates across the country.

One year later, we're checking in with pups rescued from Hurricane Helene 🧡 When Hurricane Helene devastated the Southeast, the ASPCA mobilized to several states to provide round-the-clock support to shelters, pets and pet parents impacted. During that time, we placed 126 unowned animals with our amazing shelter partners and transported the remaining unowned animals to our recovery center in Ohio. Today, we're excited to share an update on a few of the animals impacted. 🐶 Yogi was one of 19 dogs transferred from an emergency shelter in North Carolina to us in Ohio. His adopter, Leah S., found him online and was floored by how much he looked like her previous pup, who had recently passed away. While he was initially nervous, Yogi has settled into life well, showing off more of his cuddly side every day. He's even brought new life into Leah's other dog, Pearl. 🐶 Squirrel found himself on the same transport as Yogi. At our facility, he was struggling to relax in his kennel and had a lot of energy. His adopter, Megan, also found him online and couldn't get his face out of her head. In his new home, Squirrel absolutely loves structure and routine, which has helped him and Megan work through a few challenges. Megan and her family wouldn't change a thing about him! Visit https://bit.ly/42nqly2 to read more about our efforts during Hurricane Helene, and where some of these special pups landed.

This October, as part of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative, Subaru of America and its retailers will provide more than $3 million in direct funding to their local animal welfare partners, through grants administered by the ASPCA, to help cover costs for preparing animals for adoption, veterinary expenses, and more. Many Subaru retailers will also host adoption, microchipping, or other types of events in their stores to help ensure more pets can find loving homes in their communities. RESCUE UPDATE: Nearly 70 Animals Removed❗ Last week, the ASPCA assisted with the rescue of nearly 70 animals, including dogs and birds, in Northern Ohio. The inhumanely treated animals were removed after they were found living in poor conditions. Dogs were being housed in unsanitary conditions without access to clean water and suffering from untreated medical issues and were transported to an ASPCA facility where they will receive forensic veterinary examinations, medical treatment, and behavioral care. The birds, who were also living in inhumane conditions, were transported to Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Ravenna, Ohio for ongoing care. Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary also assisted the ASPCA with this response. As we continue to care for these rescued dogs, its critical that we have people like you by our side. Your support ensures we can be there at a moment’s notice when animals need us most. Please make an urgent gift today to help support these efforts and to help us continue our lifesaving work nationwide. Donate now👉 aspca.org/OHanimalrescue

Supporting the ARL 🧡 The ASPCA team is on the ground in Des Moines, IA, assisting the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. with critical support as they care for over 1,500 animals at their shelter. The ARL recently responded to a largescale animal hoarding case in their state and they routinely respond to assist local animals in need. To help lighten the load, we jumped in to help with daily care and transporting some animals out of their shelter and to an ASPCA facility, where we will help them find loving homes. Tulip's Heartbreaking Story Blossoms into Advocacy 🌷 Tulip was born into chaos at a USDA-licensed breeding facility. As a puppy, she was attacked by another dog, suffering injuries to her ear and eye. No longer "valuable" to sell as a puppy, she was forced to become a breeding dog instead. Like many flat-faced dogs, Tulip also suffered from brachycephaly, which included narrow nostrils, an elongated palate, an abnormally small windpipe, and other issues that caused breathing to be a daily struggle. Despite these health issues, she was still bred but all her puppies died. This officially made her "useless" to the breeder, and at four years old, she was discarded. Thankfully, she found a second chance. Tulip soon found a loving home with Kris and Tom, who were excited to show her what life and love could be like. They noticed her health issues and immediately set up veterinarian appointments to provide Tulip with some type of relief. However, her breathing caused her so much struggle, and she was brought to the emergency room. When they met with the surgeon, it was explained that Tulip would need surgery to have a chance at a normal life. Unfortunately, after the procedure, it was clear that little Tulip's body had been through too much. Kris and Tom held her close and ultimately said goodbye, providing her the opportunity to rest in peace. This #PuppyMillAwarenessDay, let Tulip's story be a catalyst to inspire and help other dogs who continue to suffer in deplorable puppy mills and inhumane breeding facilities. And always know that when you choose pet adoption, you make a lifesaving impact that benefits more than one animal. Puppy Mill Awareness Day highlights why we must continue fighting for stronger legislation and enforcement to protect vulnerable animals.

🐾 In commercial breeding operations that put profit over welfare, dogs are often confined in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions with little to no veterinary care, socialization or compassion. The ASPCA has long fought to expose this cruelty and protect the animals trapped in these systems.   📅 Today, on Puppy Mill Awareness Day (September 20), we are reminded why this fight matters—and why we must continue working to end the cruelty of puppy mills once and for all.   📣 Earlier this year, our supporters made their voices heard: Fighting for stronger legislation to protect puppy mill victims was their top priority for animal welfare going into 2025.   That’s why we’re urging Congress to pass Goldie’s Act, named for a dog who died in a USDA-licensed puppy mill. This bill would require the USDA to: ✔️ Conduct more frequent and meaningful inspections ✔️ Provide lifesaving intervention for suffering animals ✔️ Impose meaningful violations ✔️ Engage in timely communication with local law enforcement in circumstances of suspected cruelty and neglect Through legislation, legal action, enforcement and public education, we’re working every day to protect dogs from the horrors of puppy mills.   💪 Let’s keep pushing — for Goldie, and for every dog still waiting for help. Goldens galore at Goldzilla! Our wonderful advocacy team had a booth at the 16th annual Goldzilla event in Minnesota to spread awareness about #GoldiesAct. With over 1,500 attendees, 700+ dogs and amazing weather, it was a perfect opportunity to share Goldie's story with fellow animal lovers. Goldie's Act is critical legislation to help protect animals in federally regulated animal businesses, like cruel puppy mills. We are grateful to have attended the event and to have provided advocacy information. Want to learn more about Goldie's Act and take action? Click here: aspca.org/GoldiesAct

In honor of #FarmAnimalAwarenessWeek, we're putting the spotlight on the billions of farm animals whose lives are impacted by policies you might not know about. At the ASPCA, we have long advocated for passing laws to protect farm animals and support more humane farming. Most recently, we have been working to ensure that animals are prioritized and protected in the long-delayed Farm Bill, a major piece of legislation that identifies national agricultural priorities and outlines the responsibilities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which will impact farm animals, companion animals and horses. This bill determines how billions of dollars are spent and shapes how our food and farm systems operate. It has the potential to significantly improve or worsen the lives of animals, people and the environment. This week, we'll be at Farm Aid in Minnesota connecting with farmers and advocates who share our desire to build a more humane food system and spreading awareness about dangerous policy efforts that would halt progress towards that goal, like the EATS Act. Say hi if you spot us! Not on the #Road2FarmAid40, but still want to take action for farm animals? Visit aspca.org/eatsact!
