  • "John Conklin, a celebrated designer of scenery for opera and theater, who tapped a boundless knowledge of music and art history, as well as an instinct for disruption, to create memorable sets for New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera and most notably the Glimmerglass Festival in upstate New York, died on June 24 in Cooperstown, N.Y. He was 88." “I was drawn to opera,” he said in a 2019 interview with Opera America, a New York-based industry organization, “because it was music and because it had the power of music, but it also had the power of theater; and the power of painting; and the power of architecture; and the power of dance. So it seemed like the ideal thing to do.” Read his full obituary in The New York Times: https://ow.ly/MX6n50WrYYC

  • From the first notes of Mitridate to the final chorus of Noah’s Flood, this season has been a powerful reminder of what it means to be a community. 👑🌀🥀🌳🎠🌊 Whether you joined us for the power of Aida, the beauty of The Seasons, the voices of Die tote Stadt, the music of Carousel, or the unforgettable gathering of 3,000 people cheering for Boston’s youth at Noah’s Flood, you were part of something extraordinary. “You’ll never walk alone” wasn’t just a line from Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel, it was the heartbeat of our entire season. We felt our shared humanity in the shared silences, the applause, the standing ovations, and most of all, in the way we came together—youth, parents, teachers, artists, and neighbors—to fill Symphony Hall for Noah’s Flood with a community built through the power of joy and music. This season showed us what’s possible when opera is more than performance. It becomes a space for connection, reflection, and joy; a place where people from every background can gather to be a part of something larger. That kind of opera doesn’t happen without you. It happens because of vision, dedication, and – crucially – because of support from people like you. Your gift makes it possible for us to keep creating work that brings people together and opens new conversations. With your support, we can carry this momentum forward—into the next season and beyond. Thank you for walking with us. Now is the perfect time to give thanks to the Coda Challenge, generously sponsored by Gerry & Sherry Cohen! Today (June 30), your gift will go further than ever: 🎶 Increases in gifts from current donors will be doubled 🎶 All gifts from new donors between $500 and $1,000 will be tripled Help us close the season strong and step into the next one with momentum. Your support today makes a lasting impact. Join the Coda Challenge and amplify your gift! Learn more and make a gift: blo.org/give

  • In Memory of John Conklin (1937–2025)   Boston Lyric Opera mourns the loss of legendary scenographer and longtime BLO Artistic Advisor John Conklin. A prolific designer, dramaturg, and luminary, John shaped dozens of BLO productions over three decades, transforming our stage with fearless imagination and profound insight.   John’s first and final productions designed for BLO were La Bohème in 1992 and the “Backwards” Bohème in 2022.  He was Artistic Advisor to BLO from 2009 until his passing in 2025.  From Macbeth to The Flying Dutchman, and Rigoletto to Greek, John’s artistic vision cracked open the emotional core of each story, challenging audiences and collaborators alike to see opera anew.   More than an artistic collaborator, John was a mentor, a friend, a teacher, and a guiding force. His legacy lives on in the artists he inspired and the unforgettable moments he created onstage.   Thank you, John. Your curiosity and artistic vision changed us.   #JohnConklin #BostonLyricOpera #OperaDesign #InMemoriam #BLOHistory #TheaterLegend #ScenographerTribute #OperaInnovation #LaBoheme #TheMerryWidow #OperaVisuals #ThankYouJohn

  • 🌈 We’re still in awe of what we experienced together at "Noah’s Flood." 🌊 More than 3,000 people — youth, parents, teachers, artists, and neighbors — came together to fill Symphony Hall with something unforgettable. With nearly 400 young performers and the involvement of more than a dozen community and partner organizations, "Noah’s Flood" was more than a performance — it was a celebration of what’s possible when we create together. These moments don’t happen by accident. They happen because of vision, dedication, and — crucially — because of support from people like you. Your gift today will help us create more experiences like "Noah’s Flood" — programs that open doors, spark dialogue, and remind us what’s possible when art meets community. Together, we can continue building a future for opera that’s inclusive, inspiring, and joyfully connected. Now is the perfect time to give, thanks to the Coda Challenge, generously sponsored by Gerry & Sherry Cohen!
