At just 2-years-old, Mikaela began her fight against cancer. After a bone marrow donation from her 9-year-old brother, our team enrolled her in the RESOLVE clinical trial, which uses modified donor T-cells to prevent relapse. Early results are showing great promise with an 89% one-year survival rate and no serious side effects reported. Recently, Mikaela rang the victory bell, celebrating remission and a chance to be a kid again. Megan joined in December 2023 after six years as a pediatric bedside nurse, inspired by her own family’s experience. “My brother was diagnosed with colon cancer, and he had a nurse navigator. I thought—wow, what an incredible role.” Her work ranges from reviewing new admissions and coordinating with neurosurgery and oncology teams to creating tailored binders of resources. “So much of the general cancer education out there doesn’t apply to brain tumors. These families deserve information that’s specific to their child’s diagnosis.” Megan also helped launch the Brain Tumor Institute (BTI) Nursing Fellowship Program, equipping bedside nurses with specialized neuro-oncology training. “Now, the nurses who completed it can act as resources for others throughout the hospital.” “This position is really unique—there aren’t many pediatric nurse navigators in the country. We recognized the need and it gave me the autonomy to shape the role into something truly meaningful for families.” Thank you Megan for the dedication and compassion you give to patients and families!

Cardiac patients have some of the highest 30-day unplanned readmission rates in the U.S. A new study in Pediatric Cardiology drilled into those rates at one pediatric heart center to determine what makes these patients more likely to return to the hospital so soon after going home. https://lnkd.in/eX9JTxAX
