Michael had a problem we all recognize: He wanted to paint, but between his full-time job managing a New York hair salon and life commitments, when could he possibly find time? His solution? Brilliant in its simplicity. He painted during his lunch hour. Several months later, he debuted at his local art gallery. As he told Humans of New York: “My entire life, I'd been saying, ‘I can do that.’ I always knew it. But I finally did it.” Here's what Michael discovered (and what Herbert Lui explores in his book, Creative Doing): You don't need huge blocks of time to make meaningful creative progress. The magic comes from consistent conditions, not perfect ones. ✅ Low pressure: A lunch hour feels manageable ✅ Built-in constraint: Limited time forces you to focus on doing, not perfecting ✅ Daily practice: Consistency builds momentum faster than weekend marathons ✅ No equipment needed: You work with what you have Try this 5-minute creative reset today: 1️⃣ Set a timer for 5 minutes 2️⃣ Pick one constraint: write down only problems you noticed this week, solve a challenge using only questions, or sketch connections between three unrelated ideas 3️⃣ Create something, anything, within that constraint 4️⃣ When the timer goes off, stop immediately Don't judge what you made. Just notice how you feel. As Chuck Close said: “Inspiration is for amateurs—the rest of us just show up and get to work.” What could you create in five weeks if you started with five minutes today? P.S. - That thing you've been meaning to try? Your lunch hour is waiting. #creativity #productivity #careerdevelopment #worklifebalance
