  • #FlashbackFriday ⌚ Edward O. Thorp - the inventor of the wearable - was born in August, 1932! Fun facts: • Thorp’s “wearable computer” was designed to help him win Blackjack based on his probability model formed from his theoretic research based on the Kelly Criterion. His IBM 704 worked in such a way to help him improve the odds in his favor. • His success shot him to fame in the gambling community, so much so that he wore a variety of disguises in different casinos, as security did not approve of his winning streak and often kicked him out on recognition. • It is now illegal to wear such a device to help with gambling.

  • Tired of brain rot? Stop scrolling and watch internet pioneer Vint Cerf discuss the article he co-authored in Computer magazine! 📰 From link rot to disc rot, one of the biggest challenges we face in computing is digital preservation: Books can crumble, tapes and floppy discs can warp, and CDs and DVDs can break… In short, there are plenty of issues with the current and potential deterioration of the physical mediums where we store old information. In this Open Access article, 'Communicating With the Future', Vint discusses the ever-growing difficulties of long-term retention and protection of digital information, and how we can secure the future of the information from our past. 👩🔬 Meet the Researchers: vint cerf, Todd Kelsey PhD, Thomas Coughlin 🔗 Check the comments below! #Research #Innovation #DigitalPreservation #DataProtection #computers #technology #OpenAccess

  • #ThisDayInHistory! 📜 Today we celebrate the birth of Jean Hoerni, creator of the Planar Process, a technique crucial to manufacturing essentially all silicon transistors and micro-chips today 💻 Fun facts: • Hoerni's invention was initially dismissed as "technically impossible." When he first proposed his planar process, the idea of using silicon dioxide to protect p-n junctions was considered unworkable by some due to earlier, flawed research. He proved them wrong. • Climbing inspired his philanthropy. After visiting the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan, he was moved by the poverty of the Balti people. He later funded the construction of schools and established the Central Asia Institute with a million-dollar endowment to support them. • He was a continual entrepreneur who produced parts for digital watches. After leaving Fairchild Semiconductor, he founded several other companies, including Intersil in 1967.
