An AI application is more than its model call. It also depends on language runtimes, packages, services, environment variables, scripts, quality checks, ports, and workflows. When that setup lives only in documentation, or one developer’s memory, “works on my machine” can quickly become a team-wide problem. Our July Quito Lambda session used a Python mystery game to demonstrate how devenv, powered by Nix, can define an AI development environment in code. The session covered everything from local models and Python dependencies to Git hooks, databases, and dynamic ports. It also revealed an important distinction: reproducibility does not guarantee better AI output, but it does provide a stable foundation for testing models, refining prompts, onboarding contributors, and moving experiments toward maintainable products.
