Yeah, I've been playing with this knob a fair amount over the last few years as well as watching how it affects other teams and there are a lot of interesting aspects to it.
The big reason people go into it is what you call out: you can optimize an organization for execution by reducing layers. And the easiest way to reduce layers it to have larger spans of control. Especially in the executive + middle-management tiers.
This is particularly critical if you are trying to make a big change. Lots of small teams and layers from senior leader to individual contributors means lots of places for momentum and individual plans. The immediate cost of that is against local decision making. If, as a leader, you have a team of 4-6 managers you can discuss and decide. If you've got 15 managers in your team meeting, that's not a decision making body. But it is a forum where everyone will hear the same message at the same time.
Another benefit of large spans and large teams is that it allows you as a leader to bring more people to bear on a problem flexibly, without having to make org changes. So less of the strategy has to be correctly encoded into the org chart. This doesn't _require_ large spans of control, but it works well in that system.

Jim Curtis Haha, thanks. I wasn't sounding good, that's for sure. I had a kicking head-cold the day before and was wondering if I sounded all stuffed up. It took 10 seconds of watching the recording to confirm my suspicion.... Ah well, win some, lose some.
