Earlier this week, Charter partnered with AARP to host a dinner with senior HR leaders, people executives, and other experts on a question that is only growing in importance: how do we support older workers and build stronger multigenerational teams in the age of AI? Our discussion was anchored by AARP’s research and the work of Alicia Wallace, MPH, the director of age inclusive marketing at AARP. This roundtable was off the record, but a few takeaways that stayed with me: 📌 Older workers often outperform expectations with AI. Many approach it with curiosity and deep experience in how to ask the right questions—a reminder that prompting is as much about judgment as it is about speed. 📌 Generational branding is misleading. Resistance or adoption isn’t about age, it’s about mindset. Curiosity and flexibility are the true differentiators across a multigen workforce. 📌 Training must be differentiated. Digital natives often want to “just try it,” while seasoned workers may want to understand fundamentals before diving in. Meeting people where they are builds confidence and adoption. 📌 AI can’t replace wisdom. Experience brings context, nuance, and ethical judgment that machines cannot replicate. Companies risk real blind spots if they overlook that. It was a rich, energizing conversation that reinforced this truth: a multigenerational workforce isn’t just a demographic reality, it’s a strategic advantage, especially as AI reshapes how we work.
