However, I saw a post with this image (and an ad for their book...), and the message range true, so I borrowed it. Our best performers already put pressure on themselves to meet tight deadlines, give clarity to often messy data, write detailed reports to explain details. They already give 110% in their work. They often stay late or come in early and they may work through lunch. They sacrifice and embody teamwork by joining global calls outside of normal work hours, when they could be with family. How often do we, as managers, stop to appreciate this level of work? How often do upper level staff miss this level of dedication in the employee, and pile more on because "s/he is so good at what they do!" It's a balance to be a manager: I need the work done and done well, but I also need to take care of my team and make sure their efforts and good work are recognized, and their work/life load is not affected over the long term. Indeed: never forget what our best performers are already doing.

We expect Project Managers to: Lead through uncertainty. Influence without authority. Surface uncomfortable truths. Challenge unrealistic commitments. Keep teams aligned when priorities collide. Those are fair expectations. But excellence cannot be one-sided. If organizations want exceptional Project Managers, they have to create conditions where exceptional project management can happen. That means: → Clear goals → Real authority → Timely decisions → Honest risk reporting → Realistic commitments → Sponsors who stay engaged This is not about lowering expectations for Project Managers. Raise them. Develop them. Challenge them. Expect them to lead. But expect the organization to do its part too. Because even the most capable PM cannot create clarity from decisions nobody will make. They cannot protect capacity leadership has already overcommitted. And they cannot surface risks honestly in an environment that punishes bad news. Great Project Managers should spend their energy leading the work forward. Not fighting the organization just to make basic project management possible. If you want better Project Managers, build a place where great Project Managers can actually do great work. The standard should be high on both sides. Chuck Blish liked thisChuck Blish liked thisSometimes I think my real PM title should be Chief Chaos Coordinator. Or maybe Marshaller. Or, depending on the day, Team Leader, Dumpster Fire Response Team. I actually have that last one hanging on my wall. And honestly, all three describe parts of the job. The Marshaller is watching the whole picture. What's moving? What's changed? Who needs to know? What's about to collide? What needs to happen next? The Chief Chaos Coordinator is connecting all those moving pieces. Two teams need the same resource? We'll figure it out. A decision needs to be made? Let's get the right people together. Three stakeholders have three different versions of reality? Time to connect some dots. And I actually love that part of the job. Give me a complicated project. Lots of moving pieces. Competing priorities. A few problems nobody saw coming. That's project management. What gets exhausting is when the PM becomes the permanent workaround. No clear decision owner? The PM figures it out. No prioritization process? The PM creates one. Resources committed to everything? The PM negotiates. Information isn't flowing? The PM tracks it down. The process doesn't work? The PM builds a workaround. And here's the tricky part. It works. The project moves. The deadline gets hit. The launch happens. So the organization sees a successful project. But sometimes what’s really happening is a PM compensating for a gap in how the organization operates. At some point, the PM becomes the system. And when the workaround becomes the operating model, that's a different problem. I don't mind being the Marshaller. I don't mind being the Chief Chaos Coordinator. I just don't want to spend every project leading the Dumpster Fire Response Team.
