Zambia to Use Fayda - Ethiopian National ID as Model for National ID System #EBR_News Oct 7 2025 Ethiopia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Zambia to support the development of its national digital identity system, leveraging Ethiopia’s pioneering Fayda digital #ID platform. The agreement, finalized last week, focuses on knowledge sharing, capacity building, and technical cooperation. Under the pact, Zambia will adopt Ethiopia’s Fayda system as a model for its own digital identity program, which aims to improve access to healthcare, education, banking, and social services. The collaboration will include expertise transfer in biometric enrollment, open standards, and interoperable systems. Launched in 2023, Fayda - Ethiopian National ID system has already registered over 25 million people, with a goal of reaching 90 million citizens by 2027. According to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) quarterly report (http://bit.ly/47wX87a), Starlink lost over 2,000 subscribers in Q1 2025 in Kenya, falling from 19,146 users at the end of 2024 to 17,066 by March 2025. The drop pushed it down from 7th to the 8th largest ISP, overtaken by Dimension Data Solutions East Africa Ltd. This setback came despite Starlink establishing a local ground station in January 2025 (the second PoP in Africa after Nigeria) which cut latency from 120 ms to as low as 20 ms and boosted capacity by 32.7%. Meanwhile, Kenya’s fixed internet market grew by 8.1%, adding more than 150,000 new connections across providers such as Safaricom, Jamii Telecommunications and Zuku. https://lnkd.in/dhGG_RQ5 What went wrong? - A freeze on new subscriptions from late 2024 to mid 2025 in high-demand areas like Nairobi due to capacity limits? - Prices nearly double mainstream ISPs like Safaricom and Zuku? - User complaints of 47 Mbps average speeds despite advertised speeds of upto 200 Mbps? - Intensifying competition from local ISPs, who responded with cheaper, more competitive packages? Starlink’s stumble shows that technology alone won’t win Africa’s internet race. As satellite data becomes increasingly critical to the management of land, water, and climate-related challenges, African nations are exploring opportunities to maximise and streamline their data infrastructure. Together, we’re customising a local Open Data Cube (ODC) deployment, a move that empowers Kenya to store, analyse, and manage Earth observation data within its borders. This hybrid model includes a restricted-access sandbox for internal users and a future-facing public layer to expand access while safeguarding sensitive data. Supported by DE Africa’s “Africa Cube in a Box,” this initiative is built on collaboration, data governance, and capacity-building, tailored for Kenya’s unique infrastructure and policy needs.
