Jeordan Legon reposted thisJeordan Legon reposted thisHe didn’t just launch a company—he launched an entire industry. One idea, $500, and biotech was born. Bob Swanson (1947-1999, Brooklyn, NY) was an American venture capitalist and a foundational figure in the biotechnology industry. As co-founder of Genentech, the world’s first biotechnology company, he served as CEO from 1976 to 1990 and chairman from 1990 to 1996. Swanson earned a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Management from MIT in 1970. He began his career at Citibank, managing venture investments and later helping establish Citicorp Venture Capital’s San Francisco office. In 1974, he joined Kleiner & Perkins, where his interest in recombinant DNA technology took shape. After the firm chose to pull back from science-based ventures, Swanson departed but remained committed to pursuing biotechnology. In 1976, he met biochemist Herbert Boyer. Their meeting led to the founding of Genentech, each investing $500. Swanson secured $100,000 in seed funding from Kleiner & Perkins and became president and treasurer. Genentech’s first breakthrough came in 1977 with the successful synthesis of somatostatin using genetically engineered bacteria. In 1978, they synthesized human insulin, leading to a strategic partnership with Eli Lilly. Under Swanson’s leadership, Genentech pioneered genetic engineering, secured key patents, and built a model for industry-academia collaboration. In 1980, Swanson led Genentech through a record-setting IPO, raising $35 million—the largest in biotech history at that time. In 1985, the FDA approved Genentech’s human growth hormone, Protropin, marking a turning point for biotech commercialization. Swanson remained chairman until retiring in 1996. He died in 1999 at age 52 from brain cancer. His legacy lives on through Genentech, which continues to innovate and uphold practices he instituted, such as enabling scientists to publish research. Under his leadership, Genentech developed the first drug via genetic engineering, became the first biotech firm to go public, and was the first to market its own drug—securing Swanson's lasting place in biotech history. 📮Follow Richard Toad for daily profiles of investors and founders

Jeordan Legon reposted thisJeordan Legon reposted thisA world in which we can prevent disease and its progression? Advanced technologies like AI are integral to making this vision a reality. They definitely weren’t on my radar when I started in this industry decades ago – yet they’re now an essential part of what’s ahead (and honestly, what’s upon us). Have a listen! #AheadTogether #AmbitiousForPatients #GSKProud

Jeordan Legon shared this#AI Acceleration is on -- even in healthcare. The FDA cleared 223 AI-enabled medical devices last year. Thanks to Larry Mickelberg for posting. #generativeai #agenticaiJeordan Legon shared this🌍 The 2025 Stanford University AI Index is out — and it paints a stunning picture of AI's momentum, impact, and growing complexity. At Axonal.AI, we see these global trends not just as milestones, but as signals—opportunities to drive better, faster, and more ethical innovation in life sciences marketing. 🔬 Here’s what stood out—and how we’re leaning in: AI performance is accelerating. From GPQA to SWE-bench, benchmarks are being shattered. This matters deeply in commercialization, where precision and clarity are non-negotiable. We're engineering agents that don’t just perform well—they understand deeply. AI is everywhere—including healthcare. The FDA cleared 223 AI-enabled medical devices last year. As AI embeds in diagnostics and therapeutics, Axonal is focused on closing the communication gap—helping ensure these breakthroughs reach the right minds, at the right moment, with context and confidence. Business is all in on AI. With $109B in U.S. private AI investment in 2024, the world is betting big. We’re building for this future: helping life sciences teams transform data, insights, and outreach into synchronized, intelligent action. The frontier is tightening. Nearly 90% of top models now come from industry. This raises the stakes—and the bar. At Axonal.AI, we’re not just tracking the frontier. We're applying frontier models (and training our own) to push science-driven marketing forward with speed and integrity. Responsible AI is no longer optional. As AI-related incidents rise, ethical design and transparent reasoning must be built-in from day one. Axonal.AI is committed to explainability, auditability, and trust—because when health is on the line, so is everything. AI is becoming radically more efficient and accessible. The cost to run GPT-3.5-class models has dropped 280xin two years. We're using this trend to democratize advanced AI tools for pharma, biotech, and device marketers—without the enterprise bloat. This report makes one thing clear: AI is no longer emerging. It has emerged. At Axonal.AI, we’re here to ensure that the business gets smarter alongside it. 📚 Read the full Stanford AI Index here: https://lnkd.in/efkNG92s 💡 Learn more about our work: www.axonal.ai

Jeordan Legon reacted on thisJeordan Legon reacted on thisThis new study highlights the potential of wearable biosensors to transform the management of cystic fibrosis. Researchers validated a soft, skin-mounted microfluidic sweat patch that can measure chloride concentrations outside of specialized laboratories. The patch showed strong correlation with gold-standard chloridometry and demonstrated feasibility for repeated, remote use during exercise. Why does this matter? Sweat chloride is a critical biomarker for monitoring disease progression and treatment response in cystic fibrosis, particularly for patients on CFTR modulators. Traditional methods are invasive, time-consuming and limited to referral centers. A wearable solution could enable more frequent monitoring, provide insights into day-to-day variability and help tailor treatment more precisely. At the same time, caution is needed. The device is not a replacement for gold-standard diagnostic tests and variability in results for people with cystic fibrosis shows that clinical integration will require further validation. Moreover, issues such as patient usability, equity of access and regulatory oversight will determine whether this innovation can scale responsibly. #DigitalHealth #Wearables #Biomarkers #CysticFibrosis #RemoteMonitoring #PatientCentricCare #HealthInnovation #PersonalizedMedicine #mHealth #TranslationalResearch https://lnkd.in/d9EvRtFw
