A search engine can provide referencing information as context for a particular search result when an excerpt from the search result, comprising at least some similar elements to the user's query, is not generated. Referencing information can include one or more anchor texts having similarity to at least some elements of the user's query, the anchor texts being used by referencing pages to link to the page returned as a search result. User selection of the anchor text can enable the user to visit a referencing page using that anchor text to link to the page returned as a search result, and having a high static rank.

The invention provides a provisioning system which dynamically and automatically allocates index servers to different respective uses. For example, the provisioning system can determine that a normal production use of the search engine leaves a portion of the index servers under-utilized; if so, the provisioning system can allocate the under-utilized index servers to different analysis-related uses and/or testing-related uses, etc. This has the effect of smoothing overall demand for the index servers. Further, the provisioning system can apply customized code and/or index information to particular respective uses. The claims are directed to a method, apparatus, and computer readable medium for performing the above-described functions.
