Martin Thompson reposted thisMartin Thompson reposted thisThe shift to remote work has become our reality, and leading distributed development teams effectively requires a new set of strategies. Here's my advice on managing remote development teams: Prioritize Human Connection: •Regular visits and social interactions between team members in different locations are crucial. These face-to-face interactions foster stronger relationships and understanding, making communication smoother. •Building trust and breaking down "tribal" barriers is essential for effective collaboration. When teams feel connected, they are more likely to support each other and work towards shared goals. Optimize Team Structure: •Avoid geographically splitting teams by function. Instead, organize teams around features or projects, with all necessary roles represented at each location. This reduces communication barriers and fosters cross-functional collaboration. •If functional splits are unavoidable, empower remote teams to make decisions and take ownership, rather than resorting to "programming by remote control." Clear goals and guidance are essential, but micromanagement stifles creativity and innovation. Embrace Asynchronous Communication: •Supplement live meetings with asynchronous written communication tools like chat platforms. This helps overcome language barriers and allows team members to participate at their own pace. •Clear documentation and well-maintained systems like version control, CI/CD, and wikis are critical for smooth collaboration. Invest in Effective Tools and Infrastructure: •Don't skimp on technology. Equipping remote teams with the right tools and infrastructure ensures they can work efficiently and productively.4 •Prioritize robust communication channels, efficient CI/CD pipelines, and effective knowledge-sharing platforms. Remote work may present unique challenges, but with the right approach, we can unlock its potential and build thriving, collaborative development teams.

Martin Thompson reposted thisMartin Thompson reposted thisHot Deploying Low-Latency Services for 24/7 Operation Do you need to schedule downtime for release? Do check out this presentation by Martin Thompson packed with knowledge and advice. Why should you release more often? Cost of #downtime upwards of $9k per minute (an old study from 2016). Common causes of unplanned downtime are Operator Error or Misconfiguration, Platform and #cyberattacks At least for security #patching you should release often. There are other very good reasons to release more often such as #continuousdelivery 24/7 Always-On is a quality attribute that is driven by business requirements of staying competitive in the face of globalization and pervasive devices. #HighAvailability Metrics MTBF - Mean time between failure MTTR - Mean time to Recover RTO - (Recovery time objective) RPO - (Recovery point objective) Question is how do you hot upgrade your system to satisfy HA? Hot upgrading a stateless service is easy. There are established deployment patterns to accomplish that. Its the state that always makes it hard. #microservices approach is to break down the function so much so that when parts of the system are unavailable, users don't notice. This approach does not work in financial systems for functions such as funds transfer. Replicated State Machines #RSM can solve this problem. https://lnkd.in/egPc5hjd - Use #Consensus and #FaultTolerance - RAFT has evolved as a de facto standard. https://raft.github.io/ - Fault tolerance enables node level rolling upgrades - To maintain low latency you have to rely on async pattern - Another consideration is having 5 nodes clusters to tolerate for node failure during upgrades How to release more often? Take inspiration from biology. React to only what we know. Version Everything - Use #SemVer https://semver.org/ - Messages - Never take any field away , Only extended optionally - Session Protocols - Features Golden Rules to follow - Once something is out there, you can never take it back - Be strict with #encapsulation - System interaction must be based on expected behavior, not internal representation - Establish handover and recovery protocols to deal with system interactions. Techniques like idempotence help. #DisasterRecovery - Must have readily executable policies in place What matters at the extremes is use of Multicast and Async. The real world works on eventual consistency. I liked what Martin said about the term Non-Functional Requirements #nfr. Dave Farley recently did a video on this topic as well (https://lnkd.in/ew7BBQmv) How are security, high throughput etc. not the essential functions of our systems? A much better term he suggests is "Quality Attributes of the system" #patching #continuousdelivery #hotdeployments #lowlatency https://lnkd.in/eVeJnsMCHot Deploying Low-Latency Services for 24/7 Operation • Martin Thompson • YOW! 2022Hot Deploying Low-Latency Services for 24/7 Operation • Martin Thompson • YOW! 2022

Martin Thompson liked thisMartin Thompson liked thisDave Thomas is one of my programming heroes. He's one of the authors of The Pragmatic Programmer (my favorite book on software development), one of the key people who brought Ruby from Japan to the western world (through "the pickaxe book", Programming Ruby), and one of the authors of the Agile manifesto. Among other things. 19 years ago, in March 2007, I went to Chicago to take a week-long intensive course called Advanced Rails Studio, taught by Chad Fowler, Mike Clark, and Dave Thomas. Some of the other bright-eyed and bushy-tailed students of the course included David Chelimsky (creator of RSpec), Bob Martin ("Uncle Bob", author of Clean Code, etc), and my friends David Vrensk, Niclas Nilsson, and Jarkko Laine. It had a profound effect on my career. I brought my original copy of The Pragmatic Programmer, like a proper fanboy. Dave signed it, and added the inscription "Remember to make it fun." Anyway, why am I sharing this bit of late-night nostalgia? Because Dave's latest Pragmatic Bookshelf newsletter brought back all those memories. In it, he talks about the joy of programming, and his perspective of how AI is changing that. Or not. Worth a read: https://lnkd.in/eSyCUR9A

Martin Thompson liked thisMartin Thompson liked thisEarlier this week I attended a really interesting webinar from Matt Barrett and Martin Thompson at Adaptive to showcase their new Aeron Sequencer, which is a state machine replication architecture for capital markets use-cases. What people like Martin Thompson bring to talks like this is the ability to communicate complex ideas simply: "Concurrency makes fintech software engineering so difficult," especially when we have millions upon millions of messages and events flying around all day long. Martin referenced Amdahl's Law, which speaks to constraints that limit the speedup of a task as resources are added to the system executing that task. He discussed how unifying people around the same approach (i.e. reducing the coherence problem) is the best way to get around scale-up issues, and what Martin brought to the fore was having multiple in-memory, single-threaded state machines running across clusters with replication of a single, ordered log of truth. This is to enable recovery by not dropping messages, which is every trading engineer’s nightmare! I hope it takes off, as the Aeron stack has a track record of excellence and when people can talk expertly about a subject without needing to rely on slides, I find their ideas to be all the more credible!

For risky one off refactors search for a codemod or ask the llm to write a codemod with tests first For long running rules ask llm to write lint rules for your language These convert llm output to deterministic functions, guaranteed to not lose learning or context on reruns

Following on from my previous post on the current conflict between Agentic coding suites and GitHub's premium request billing model, I decided to have a go at creating a set of agents that are GitHub premium request friendly. Introducing Squadron: https://lnkd.in/gjjX4K4K It's mainly for my own entertainment, but if it's useful to someone out there then I'm glad it helps. It's based on a spec-driven development concept. You interact with the Refine Requirements agent to define what you want. It asks pertinent questions and creates a backlog of tasks. You interact with the Task Dispatcher agent and tell it to work on the backlog. It then kicks off the suite of agents to analyse, implement, review, test the backlog tasks and ensure the backlog is kept up to date. There's slightly more to it under the hood to keep things interesting 😁 - Multi agent debate approach to code reviews - Context friendly backlog - Review friendly chunks of work

For those interested in my AI-built Occam transpiler, this will not mean much to anyone else! I showed the LLM the source for the kroc compiler, summarized the ideas from the previous Claude session (see last week's post) on how to implement support for #INCLUDE of modules, and in less than an hour it came up with this PR: https://lnkd.in/gxxz4FFF One thing I found a bit mind-boggling was that it nonchalantly mentioned in passing that we weren't going to be able to compile all of the "course" module because it used language features that weren't implemented. Interesting because I hadn't asked it to look at the module source, and also interesting because its idea of which language features were implemented came from the source code, not the document that says which features are implemented (it turned out to be incorrect). The kind of thing you'd expect from a very competent human developer: it spots that the general goal it deduced you have, but didn't actually articulate explicitly, can't be achieved for <reasons> that you hadn't asked it to think about. So next we have another iteration to get it to implement those missing language features...

Here’s a great simple non-technical explanation of the state of personal AI agents today, such as OpenClaw (Clawbot/Clawdbot/Molt). The evolution from token prediction and tool integration to now providing looping ability to both write and run new tools is both an incredibly powerful accelerant and a bit crazy scary too. As with most things AI-related, the most important thing is to provide it with the most clear and clean detailed context possible to maximize the potential magic of AI while minimizing the negative chaos.

Great step-by-step breakdown and an explanation of the latest hype around emerging AI tools. Yes, they are (and can be) incredibly powerful when given proper context, proper instructions and well defined access and blast radius... No, they are not AGI, nor are they sentient, and should not be treated as such.

I found this a particularly useful perspective on the evolving discipline growing around AI-assisted software development. Much of the conversation today focuses on the models and tools, but this highlights something I've been seeing more often in practice: success depends just as much or more on the surrounding engineering discipline, context management, evaluation and feedback mechanisms as it does on the AI itself. Well worth a read for anyone trying to separate the hype from the reality of building production systems with AI.

I think this captures the situation well. Many of the people running this race are software engineers (aka interoperability developers). There’s plenty of coaching available—mainly in the form of NHS England interoperability and data-standards guidance—but much of it focuses on the third hurdle. That’s also where informatics clinicians tend to focus their requests, and so where national-level engineering and management attention often ends up. In reality, many software engineers have already burned out by the time they reach the second hurdle, or the project stalls there because the immediate business requirement—getting reports from the LIMS into the EPR—has been met. But as we shift from NHS Trust–level work to ICS and Regional Diagnostics models, we’ll need to come back to those first and second hurdles, scale them up into enterprise-level data models, and only then tackle the third. This needs to be an agile, iterative process—starting at hurdle one and working through each challenge together?
