Hard skills get you the interview. Soft skills get you the international offer. Early in my journey, I focused 100% on being the best .NET/Node.js dev I could be. I thought live coding was everything. I kept seeing US/Canada opportunities slip away at the 'System Design' or 'Behavioral' stage. The problem? I was communicating execution, not value. I shifted my mindset. Instead of just "I built the API with gRPC" (like in my microservices experience), I focused on the 'why'. I practiced explaining architectural trade-offs (gRPC vs. REST, RabbitMQ for async) in English, focusing on business impact (scalability, resilience). The change was night and day. My confidence to discuss complex architecture and demonstrate ownership in interviews grew 10x. Shopify announced that they're migrating away from React Native and embracing native app development. I applaud their decisive action despite investing so much in RN. I've long held the belief that the best way to build native apps is to do so using the native platform and tooling. Before llms, I sympathized with the temptation for cross platform development, or sometimes necessity around cost savings: write once run anywhere*, shared business logic (which usually doesn't belong on client). The tradeoff is a new major platform dependency that abstracts you one layer further away, that lags behind platform evolutions, and poses potential platform compliance risks. LLMs can now provide the abstraction, adopt platform evolutions when they happen, leverage the native app tooling, the best of both worlds. Cross platform frameworks are now obsolete.
