Sam Zaid liked thisSam Zaid liked thisWe RL'ed humanoid robots to Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, and Kobe Byrant! These are neural nets running on real hardware at our GEAR lab. Most robot demos you see online speed videos up. We actually *slow them down* so you can enjoy the fluid motions. I'm excited to announce "ASAP", a "real2sim2real" model that masters extremely smooth and dynamic motions for humanoid whole body control. We pretrain the robot in simulation first, but there is a notorious "sim2real" gap: it's very difficult for hand-engineered physics equations to match real world dynamics. Our fix is simple: just deploy a pretrained policy on real hardware, collect data, and replay the motion in sim. The replay will obviously have many errors, but that gives a rich signal to compensate for the physics discrepancy. Use another neural net to learn the delta. Basically, we "patch up" a traditional physics engine, so that the robot can experience almost the real world at scale in GPUs. The future is hybrid simulation: combine the power of classical sim engines refined over decades and the uncanny ability of modern NNs to capture a messy world. We open-source everything! Sam Zaid liked thisSam Zaid liked thisToday we’re unveiling Chemistry - a new firm founded by Kristina Shen, Mark Goldberg and me. We’re also announcing a debut fund of $350M – dedicated to going all in with a select number of high conviction investments at the Seed and Series A. I couldn’t be more excited to team up with Mark and Kristina after the proverbial lightning bolt struck us all earlier this year: we got in a room (actually, several rooms, and offsites, and underground parking lots) and many working sessions and hummus snacks later, realized we had the exact same vision for how to build a venture firm from scratch (not to mention the chemistry to pull it off 😉). We discovered we were so remarkably aligned on what the industry needs - and let’s face it - what it does NOT need - that we had to burn the boats and build this new thing ourselves. One thing we were certain of: this new firm would strip away the excess and instead focus maniacally on the true essence - going all in with our founders from the earliest stages. We each said out loud what had been staring us in the face: venture capital isn’t meant to scale. Committing fully and wholeheartedly to each and every one of our investments may not be a recipe for rapid growth, but it’s our north star and built into the very fabric of Chemistry. All three of us will actively support each investment. We are the portfolio services team. No one else sits between us and our founders. We strive to bring excellence - one of our core firm values - to early-stage investing. I can’t stress enough how thankful I am to the mentors I’ve been fortunate enough to learn from both inside and outside of Bessemer, the founders I’ve had the pleasure of working with, the seed and angel ecosystem that has served as an amazing sounding board for us along the way, and, finally, the LPs who have taken the plunge with us. Some things that stood out to me: 📈 Building strong business cases – Microsoft shared more tools and resources for partners like us to help our clients quantify ROI and build robust, industry-specific AI business cases. 🌎 GenAI adoption is more widespread than I thought – Industries are not dragging their feet here, there were many compelling success stories shared yesterday. 💡 No-code AI tooling – Platforms like Copilot are available now to build AI agents without needing heavy coding expertise. 🚀 Quantum computing in action – My biggest surprise? Quantum computing on Azure is already delivering real value, especially in scientific industries. Excited to take these learnings back and explore new ways to deliver value with Microsoft's stack.

Sam Zaid liked thisSam Zaid liked thisThree years, one big leap, and countless lessons later, my carsharing project on Getaround has grown from a single vehicle to a fleet of 10, all gradually woven into my city’s fabric. As I bumped into one of my regular renters this past weekend, I reflected on how my carsharing journey developed my perspective on mobility. Carsharing is more than just about cars; it's a key element of the larger mobility ecosystem – multimodal transportation, micromobility, electrification, parking and city-planning and more. When done right, carsharing can actually reduce driving and encourage more thoughtful transportation choices, helping people walk more, use diverse modes of transit, and ultimately push cities toward greater sustainability and livability. Personally, I’m excited that over 60% of my rentals come from recurring users. This makes me believe that we’re doing our part in changing how people move. I'm thankful, curious, and excited to keep exploring this evolving mobility landscape alongside so many passionate and inspiring players. #casharing #ridesharing #urbansolutions

Sam Zaid liked thisSam Zaid liked thisApple is hosting WWDC this week. Instead of talking about product announcements, I want to highlight something most people don’t know about Steve Jobs. He had brilliant insights on teamwork. Jobs is often portrayed as temperamental and difficult to work with. That may have been true. But his ability to organize and motivate teams to execute at the highest level made Apple the market leader it is today. So here are 3 Steve Jobs principles any company can apply to teamwork: 1. “Trust other folks to come through without watching them all the time” If you hire the best people, you can trust them. And you must trust them. Micromanaging A-players is counterproductive. It will stifle their ideas, productivity, and willingness to take risks. So create a culture of autonomy to let your teammates thrive. 2. “Have wonderful arguments” One way to build trust is to promote honesty and transparency. If you want to get to the best solutions, you need to empower everyone to speak their minds. Even when it causes a debate. Steve was known for creating physical workspaces that fostered spontaneous collaboration, believing that the best ideas often come from informal and even contentious conversations. 3. “Be run by ideas, not hierarchy” A true meritocracy allows the best ideas to prevail, regardless of who is for or against them. Steve led by example by admitting when he was wrong and forfeiting his proposals when someone else had a better solution. This is a priceless leadership trait. If you can humble yourself and concede your position so a better one triumphs, you will be putting your company first and inspiring your team. So as we enjoy watching all the incredible innovations come out of WWDC this week, let’s remember some of the collaboration groundwork Jobs laid years ago that made them all possible.
