    I was honored to serve the Chesterfield Toastmaster Club as the president in 2021-2022. During this program year, we made transition to the hybrid meeting format as the pandemic eases, and we successfully merged with another local club. Our club earned Selected Distinguished Club title for that program.

  • 2nd place winner, 17th Data Mining Cup Competition

    Prudsys AG, Germany

    This is an annual international data mining competition. 120 teams from 88 institutions in 30 countries participated in 2016. I'm a member of Iowa State University team. We were provided 21-month sale data of an online fashion store, asked to predict return rates of items purchased in the following three months. The solution codes are in github.com/epwalsh/dmc2016. Python and R were mainly used. We combined results of xgboost, C50, random forest, etc

  • Meritorious Winner of Mathematical Contest in Modelling

    Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications(COMAP)

    This is the modeling contest I participated as the team leader when I was junior in college. We were asked to generate a scheme to help police to predict the next crime location for any given serial killer. We used some ODE and probability knowledge. We ended up with a 60+ pages report and Meritorious Winner award. There were over 1000 teams and about 200 teams received this award.
