📢 New preprint: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐋𝐌𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡–𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Large language models (LLMs) are now widely used in multilingual, cross-cultural communication. They can produce near-perfect literal translations, but can they also support culturally appropriate communication? In this paper, we study ChatGPT’s cultural sensitivity when translating U.S. workplace emails into Japanese. We compare three prompting strategies: 1️. Naïve “just translate” prompts 2️. Audience-targeted prompts specifying the recipient’s cultural background 3️. Instructional prompts with explicit guidance on Japanese communication norms Using a mixed-methods design, we first analyze how ChatGPT’s translations shift toward Japanese business communication patterns under each condition. We then asked 50 Japanese native speakers to rate the translations on appropriateness of tone (politeness, directness, and formality). 🔎 Key findings: - Naïve prompts often miss important cultural nuances. - Simply adding cultural context (e.g., telling the LLM who the addressee is and assigning it the role of a bilingual business translator) yields a substantial improvement in appropriateness. - Instructional prompts produced the highest scores, but gains over the audience-targeted prompt were modest. ✨ Takeaway: Even users without deep knowledge of the target culture can achieve more culturally appropriate translations by adding just one line of cultural context. In this mixed-methods paper, we asked ChatGPT to draft emails in English between subordinates and their supervisors, then translate them into Japanese using three different prompt strategies: (1) a simple, naive translation, (2) an audience-targeted approach, and (3) a culturally informative and detailed approach. We then invited Japanese native speakers to rate each email on politeness, directness, formality, and intent to comply with the email request. 🔎 Key Insights - Literal accuracy is not enough. Literal translations generated by GPT-4.5 often fail to account for Japanese workplace norms, revealing that naive prompts can come across as abrupt or impolite. - Minimal cultural context goes a long way. Even a single line specifying cultural context improved ratings and reduced disagreement among Japanese native speakers about what “sounded right.” - Explicit instructions on etiquette improve results. Adding details like honorifics, indirect phrasing, and apology-prefaces produced the most culturally sensitive translations, raising perceived appropriateness and intent to comply with the email request. 💡 Conclusion: Small changes to prompts, such as subtle hints about the audience or etiquette tips, can improve cultural sensitivity in cross-cultural communication. Sometimes, communication is a better word for translation. Because translation often gives the impression of replacing one word with another. Earlier this month, I presented some examples of how professional human translators go above and beyond for their clients, serving as communicators and adding value that machines can't be relied on to. A great example is how we actively use unbiased language to ensure the whole target audience feels spoken to. Marina Torruella Bonsoms MA AITI told me how this could save her clients embarrassment further down the line. She offers 'invisible' rephrasing in her translations, using words and structures that have been long in use and are accepted by the language regulation authority. To say 'welcome' in Spanish, you typically say 'bienvenidos', which uses the male adjective ending. A more inclusive way to express it would be 'Os damos la bienvenida', something like 'We wish you a warm welcome', which avoids that gender bias. Subject to client consultation, we could use a more direct 'bienvenides', which uses a newer gender-neutral adjective ending. Whereas machines typically default to traditional or even offensive language out of step with evolving social norms, the human value that Marina brings in this scenario is that she gives her clients the opportunity to communicate in an inclusive and respectful way, to strike a chord with as broad an audience as possible rather than alienate potential customers and potentially damage the client’s reputation. #translation
