There is a short clip doing the rounds from Jeff Bezos that genuinely stayed with me. It comes from Tim Dodd’s exclusive tour of Blue Origin’s New Glenn factory in Cape Canaveral, Florida. What stood out was not the scale of the rocket. Bezos walks through the facility, closely observing how teams work on New Glenn. He points out details most leaders would skip. The GS1 booster’s aft section with seven BE-4 engines. The midsection tanks. The forward section. The second-stage hydrogen tank. But the real moment is his interaction with employees. He listens. He asks questions. He looks genuinely curious, not performative. I strongly resonate with this. Because leadership is not about walking the floor to be seen. It is about walking the floor to understand. The best leaders I have learned from share one habit. They stay close to the work. Not to micromanage. But to respect the people doing it. When leaders understand the details, teams feel valued. When teams feel valued, quality improves. And when quality improves, speed and innovation follow naturally. This clip is a reminder. Literally the only reason he even stopped was because a camera was pointed at him. He clearly couldn’t give a shit about this guy and his work history.
I agree with those saying that they are unimpressed with the interaction. Bezos displays with his body language that he doesn’t want to dedicate time to listen to and speak with his employee. He turns his body to walk away before the conversation has even started. His body language is audacious and rude. I’ve had superiors use this closed off body language on me. Sometimes people in high places delude themselves into thinking that the opinions of those below them don’t matter. Corporate leaders are aproximately 4 - 12 times more than the general population likely to exhibit psychopathic traits (Bond University study).

Bezos thought this would improve his image and make him more relatable. Nope. I hope an investigative journalist can find out it the “worker” was a paid actor. (You know like the door dash delivery actor at the White House.)
