Happy to be in the running for the International Personality Award at next week's Entrepreneurship Awards by Unicorn Factory Lisboa! We grow through challenges, and connecting my native San Francisco to Lisboa has made me much more than the author of ten books. My four year Portuguese immersion taught me to start with empathy (learning the language) and then to chronicle what I sensed on the horizon: “The New California Dream is In Portugal” for LA Mag, and “Why These Women Love Lisbon.” Quite by accident, I also became the California Ambassador to Portugal. Most startups begin as a dream. Naysayers told us RedBridge Lisbon was impossible…So We Did It. We connected our glorious Chiado Palácio with SHACK15, SF’s premiere investor & entrepreneur’s club. I launched RedBridge there with afternoon tea and Pastel de Nata, then flew 9,000+ kilometers for our Portuguese opening. We invited Portuguese founders and investors to SF, the world’s capital of tech and VC funding, and I brought top SF and NY talents to seminars I helped lead at UF and Critical Software. Crossing people and ideas became the North Star. Our smart California vibe generated the international media that helped attract more than 22 million euros in funding for Portuguese tech companies. We gave a platform for Xavier Jameson to pitch Musiversal. Then put him on our San Francisco stage. Now Musiversal is scaling, and Xavier is also up for an award, the coveted Entrepreneur of the Year. Cross one bridge and you imagine more. Now I am exploring Brazil, Poland, and the vast potential of Africa. Talent jumps borders, investors chase risk. I’m grateful for all of it. The journey is the reward.
