🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia's sustainability journey is entering a defining phase: from ambition to implementation, from projects to systems, and from commitments to measurable impact. Having reviewed Saudi Arabia's Voluntary National Review 2026 launched by the Ministry of Economy and Planning - MEPsaudi at the High Level Political Forum #HLPF 2026, one message stands out clearly to me: the Kingdom has made significant progress in embedding sustainable development within its national transformation under Vision 2030. The report presents measurable progress across nine interconnected missions spanning food systems, water, energy, protected habitats, health, human capital, cities, industry and mining, and inclusive growth. Among the achievements highlighted: 🌱 88% increase in the production of basic agricultural products between 2016 and 2024. ♻️ Food loss and waste reduced from 33.1% to 27.9%. 💧 Desalinated-water production capacity exceeded 16 million m³ per day. 🚰 99.73% of collected wastewater is now treated. 🤝 The private sector's share of desalinated-water production capacity reached 42%. 💰 More than US$15 billion in private-sector investment across 50 water-sector projects. Yet, for me, the most important message lies beyond the numbers. Saudi Arabia has already demonstrated its ability to set world-class ambitions, develop transformative strategies and mobilize investment at unprecedented scale. The defining opportunity for the next phase is to accelerate implementation, strengthen institutional capabilities, localize action and demonstrate measurable impact. My six reflections from the report are: 1- From ambition to implementation. 2- Systems over isolated projects. 3- People and capacity as the multiplier. 4- Nature as a strategic national asset. 5- Partnerships as the driver of scale. 6- Measure, disclose, improve. As Managing Director of Tilad Sustainability Co., I believe the private sector has an important role to play—not simply as a service provider, but as an implementation partner capable of connecting strategy, technical expertise, institutional capacity and measurable outcomes. The opportunity before us is significant. The question is no longer only what should we aspire to achieve? It is increasingly: How do we translate national ambition into lasting, measurable impact across institutions, sectors, cities and communities? Italy Voluntary National Review Analysis Report 2026 The World Association for Sustainable Development’s (WASD) (https://wasd.org.uk/) is very pleased to announce the publication (FREE of charge) of the analysis report of Italy Voluntary National Review (VNR) 2026 submitted recently to the United Nations UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). Italy VNR Analysis Report 2026 (https://lnkd.in/enitHTu4) is part of WASD’s major Initiative tracking the performance of countries across the world towards achieving the United Nations' Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To enhance the monitoring and evaluation of this global agenda, WASD has introduced the Sustainable Development Goals Tracker (SDGT) (https://lnkd.in/eaHjqqmG), an innovative analytical framework designed to measure and assess worldwide progress in achieving the UN’s 17 SDGs (watch video: https://lnkd.in/ePDxi9Ui). The report outlines Italy's commitment to integrating sustainable development (SD) into national policymaking through the National Sustainable Development Strategy, supported by the principles of Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development. The report highlights major policy priorities, including climate action, sustainable urban development, education for SD, sustainable finance, biodiversity conservation, and international partnerships to accelerate achievement of the UN Agenda 2030 for SD and its 17 SDGs. According to the statistical assessment, more than 50% of SDG measures improved in the latest year and more than 60% improved over the last decade, although progress remains uneven across goals and regions. Good sustainability work deserves to be recognised. But how do you prove the impact? 🤔 💭 We spoke to ATTA® for Action Awards judge Joy Mbatau at The Long Run who shares what made submissions stand out... She reviewed all of ATTA for Action's inspiring examples of conservation, community and noted that many organisations are doing incredible work - but the strongest applications weren’t always the biggest projects. They were the ones that could clearly demonstrate their impact. Her advice for tourism businesses: - Measure outcomes - Document progress - Keep partnerships visible - Build your evidence over time ....the evidence behind the work matters. Because impact isn’t just about what you do - it’s about being able to show the difference it makes.

An industry with both major economic relevance and a significant environmental footprint. How can social and health projects become more environmentally sustainable without turning green requirements into just another box to tick? 🌱 Haap Consulting carried out an environmental assessment of ESF+ activities for the Sotsiaalministeerium / Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia, analysing 58 projects in the social and health sectors. The assessment showed that environmentally responsible choices are already being made, but they are often driven by practical considerations, organisational values and efficient use of resources rather than by clearly understood green requirements. One of the key conclusions was that rigid indicators are not always the best solution. Project teams need clear guidance, sector-specific examples and practical recommendations that help them integrate environmental considerations into everyday work. The study also highlighted the importance of sustainable procurement, transport, events, digital tools and project management, while avoiding unnecessary administrative burden.
