When you hear “bus terminal,” bridge bearings and expansion joints probably are not the first things that come to mind. But the Midtown Manhattan Bus Terminal redevelopment is far more than a conventional building. It is a complex transportation structure where buses will travel across elevated decks, temporary connections, staging areas, and a seven-story ramps-and-helix system. Those structures need to carry significant, repetitive vehicle loads while accommodating movement, rotation, uplift, and the realities of construction in one of the tightest urban environments in the country. That is where R.J. Watson, Inc. comes in. Across the first phase of the project, our scope reaches into nearly every major component, including the Dyer Deck, the storage and staging facility, interim terminal connections, and the new ramps and helix structure. We are supplying more than 700 engineered bearings, including high-load, multi-rotational disc bearings and elastomeric bearings, along with approximately 3,500 feet of expansion joints. Altogether, the project incorporates nearly the full range of R.J. Watson products. Taken together across the project’s different construction packages, this work also sets a new R.J. Watson record as the largest single project in our history by total product value supplied. Some of the most interesting engineering challenges are not necessarily the largest bearings. In several locations, the components must fit within extremely limited spaces while still accommodating movement, guiding the structure, and resisting uplift. That combination of heavy loading, constrained geometry, and phased construction makes this feel much more like a major bridge project than what most people would picture when they hear “bus terminal.” We are proud to help support a project that will reshape how hundreds of thousands of people move through Manhattan while preparing the facility for an all-electric bus fleet and a more sustainable future. The Park Avenue Viaduct, which carries 98% of all Metro-North trains in and out of Grand Central, has been fully replaced five years ahead of schedule and nearly $200 million under budget. Crews rebuilt the 133-year-old structure weekend by weekend, setting 190,000 pounds of prefabricated bridge sections with custom gantry systems. Metro-North held a 97% on-time rate throughout.
