Audit Initiated of FHWA’s Process for Approving Advanced Transportation Technologies and Innovative Mobility Deployment Program Disbursements
As part of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FWHA) efforts to enhance the safety and efficiency of our Nation’s highways, the Agency’s Advanced Transportation Technologies and Innovative Mobility Deployment (ATTIMD) program awards grants to deploy, install, and operate advanced transportation technologies. FHWA intends for these technologies to improve transportation safety, mobility, efficiency, system performance, intermodal connectivity, and infrastructure return on investment. Federal law authorized $60 million each year for the ATTIMD program for fiscal years 2022 through 2026, which includes funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Strong financial management is key to ensuring IIJA grant funds are spent for their intended purpose and protecting Federal investments. Given the importance of FHWA's ATTIMD investments in supporting transportation research, development, and innovation, we are initiating this audit. Our objective will be to assess FHWA's process for approving ATTIMD program disbursements by reviewing and verifying that they are supported and valid.
