Welcome to Ragan’s revamped video series, The Comm’s Leaders Corner! We’re speaking with members of our Communications Leadership Council to learn about the mindset and approach they bring to communications.

We recently spoke with Theresa Marchetta, director of strategic communications at The City of Denver, about her thoughts on what skills today’s comms pros need and what her favorite part of the communicator’s role is.

“My favorite part about being a communicator is the opportunity for genuine connection,” Marchetta told Ragan. “It also gives us an opportunity to make a difference and influence not only our work, but for our audience. I love being able to facilitate connection, and I don’t think that is something that has to be saved for personal communication. I think it is essential in professional communication.”

Marchetta also shared her perspective on the toughest skill to sharpen as a comms pro.

“Patience,” she said. “I think coming from a journalism background, you’re used to things moving quickly, used to being at a certain pace. Being patient, slowing down and understanding that not everything moves at the same pace that you’re used to.”

Our conversation with Marchetta in its entirety can be found below.
