Complexly began in 2012, when Hank and John Green set out to create educational YouTube channels that were both genuinely informational and entertaining. Crash Course and SciShow were built on that idea, combining storytelling, humor, fun visuals, and rigorous research into videos that invited people to learn in new ways. As audiences grew, those early shows demonstrated that high-quality educational videos could flourish on YouTube while remaining true to our mission. That has always been possible because of the people who watch, share, teach with, and support our work. With that foundation, Complexly has grown into a network of shows exploring new ways to help people understand their world. In early 2026, Complexly started a new chapter by becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, deepening our commitment to the mission that has guided us from the beginning.

Our mission at Complexly is to create trustworthy stuff that inspires curiosity and lowers barriers to knowledge-building. Our vision is to cultivate curiosity and build knowledge in more people, more ways, and more places. We believe education is a human right and that learning works best when we meet people where they’re at. We value inquiry, narrative, and accuracy, and we believe that inspired learning creates wonder and joy. We prioritize accurate, engaging narrative over rigidity of curriculum, and we imagine the world complexly. These ideas shape how we approach every video, podcast, and project we produce.
