But first, I wanted to take 2 minutes to talk about why “Augustus”. Augustus was the inventor of modern currency. When he came into power every province had their own coin. He centralized the mint, the coinage and invented what we still know today: The national currency system. Augustus was the original underdog. When he was named Julius Caesar’s heir, there were easily 10 people who were objectively more likely than him to win in the following struggle for power. He still succeeded, against all odds. Today, I’m proud of a team that also succeeded, against all odds. Who would have thought we’d actually pull it off? And I’m proud of a team that is re-inventing money one more time. I think it’s an important mission: Hard currencies are the best product in the history of the world, but distribution is broken. If we want to secure Western Currency dominance, we need to fix that. "Usually it's a fintech that's on top of a partner bank, and the partner bank oftentimes doesn't even clear their own payments at the Fed, and so they may work with JP Morgan. And so it's a bit of a layer cake already." "It's very hard to really execute and deliver on a consistent, frictionless technology vision and platform if you're not in control of the full stack." For institutions building dollar access outside the US, the question is whether the provider they depend on actually owns the clearing relationship or rents it through a chain of intermediaries.

But International Fintechs and non-US banks are left with two unsatisfying options to access it: Either they build on legacy clearing banks that are slow and unreliable, or they interface with middleware providers that don’t move and hold the dollars directly, but themselves rely on underlying legacy banks. Augustus collapses this stack by combining two things: A real, national bank charter (in organization), and Marble, our proprietary core banking system, built around intelligence, made of code. The round grabs attention, but the more interesting part is how they positioned themselves to get there: by hiring for their biggest bottleneck first. Before filing for a national bank charter, Augustus brought in Greg Quarles as President. He spent 18 years at the OCC before going on to run H&R Block Bank, Green Dot Bank and United Texas Bank. In May, Augustus received preliminary conditional approval for a full-service national bank charter - one of fewer than ten approved since 2010. It then appointed a CCO with experience across Column, JPMorgan and HSBC before raising the round. They didn’t treat regulation and compliance as functions to add once they were ready to scale. They built regulatory credibility into the leadership team early. That’s the hiring pattern worth watching across stablecoin and dollar-rail infrastructure. When a charter is part of the product, the bottleneck isn’t just whether you can build the technology. It’s whether you have the leadership required to get it approved and operate it.

That is the thesis behind Augustus, which today announced a $180M Series B at a $1B valuation. David and I were fortunate to invest in the Seed. Back then, Ferdinand Dabitz, Simon Wimmer, and team were already pursuing an ambitious vision. Somehow, every conversation with them since has made that vision even bigger. And along the way, Ferdi, a German immigrant, became the youngest CEO of a federally chartered bank in US history. The insight: The dollar won. Its infrastructure did not. The dollar is more than a currency. It is the operating system of the global financial system and one of America's greatest exports. Yet accessing it from outside the US still means navigating decades-old correspondent banking infrastructure, fragmented technology, and settlement that remains constrained by banking hours. Augustus proposition is that the dollar distribution itself should be rebuilt. Rather than layering software on top of legacy rails, they are building the Global Dollar Bank from scratch: vertically integrating a US bank charter, modern core banking infrastructure, and programmable payment rails to give financial institutions direct, always-on access to the dollar. That is the kind of ambition that changes industries. Excited to see what comes next.
