THURSDAY UPDATE: As we told you, Universal’s The Odyssey passed Oppenheimer‘s $330M lifetime cume in 13 days with a Wednesday take of $13.6M and running total of $334.2M. It took 7x Oscar winner Oppenheimer 595 days to final at $330M, and that was with Imax re-releases.

Odyssey will play deep into August on Imax. Typically Warner Bros will own Imax for certain key features, however, for the upcoming Bad Robot Anne Hathaway-Ewan McGregor dinosaur movie, The End of Oak Street, on Aug. 14, they’ll have to co-share with Odysseus. Again, in its upcoming third weekend, the expectation for Odyssey is that the floor is around $45M, which would be a remarkable hold at -50%. Oppenheimer in its third weekend against Barbie eased -38% with $29.1M and it should be no surprise for Odyssey to beat that percentile hold. Just like Nolan saw his best sophomore frame ever with Odyssey last weekend at $90M, he could also see his best third weekend, outstripping Dark Knight‘s $42.6M and Dark Knight Rise‘s $35.7M third frame.
Tonight, Spider-Man: Brand New Day fully jumps into summer, and with that a rally into the fall. While the conservative estimate is $195M, and the logical around $200M+, tracking service Greenlight Analytics (formerly the Quorum) sees this Sony/Marvel Studios movie easily exceeding the previous installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $260M domestic (remember, there’s already $80M in presales for Brand New Day which technically exceeds No Way Home‘s $78M advance tickets before opening). This is based on increasing heat of awareness, intent to see and interest among the under 35 set that’s pacing ahead of Toy Story 5. Rivals have the opening higher between $280M-$300M.

Meanwhile, Rentrak reports that the summer domestic B.O. is sitting at just north of $3B, “That puts the industry within striking distance of a summer season north of $4 billion,” writes the firm’s Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That means a rare $1B August for the North American marketplace which has only been achieved twice before in 2014 (when Guardians of the Galaxy first bowed) and 2016 (when David Ayer’s Suicide Squad hit theaters). August 2024 came close when Deadpool & Wolverine was in play, the entire month grossing more than $907M.

TUESDAY UPDATE: It took Christopher Nolan’s multi-Oscar-winning 2023 pic Oppenheimer 595 days to final at just over $330M stateside, and it’s taking the director’s The Odyssey just 13 days to outstrip that result.
The filmmaker’s feature take on Homer’s epic poem hasn’t eased one bit, with its second Monday charting $14.7M and Tuesday looking like $16M+ for what’s bound to be a running total of $320.1M stateside. By EOD Wednesday, The Odyssey is expected to cross $330M+ on its 13th day of release, not only besting Oppenheimer but becoming Nolan’s third-highest-grossing movie at the domestic B.O. after The Dark Knight ($534.9M) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1M).
As we told you, with the arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has a shot at reaching a North American opening around $200M, Odyssey‘s third weekend looks to ease by 50% at most, or $45M.
The Odyssey already is Matt Damon’s highest-grossing movie (in a leading role) at the domestic box office.
Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk and LD Entertainment’s Broadway-capture film Hadestown was No. 2 Monday with $2.2M. Today is looking like $1.4M, with a running total just under $14M. The pic originally was scheduled to have a five-day run but is being extended into a second weekend with 1,560 locations.
Really makes you think about those rumors that crew were made to work as local hires and did not get raises after Oppenheimer.
IMO – I don’t get it. Walked out after an hour, and that’s with a $36 IMAX ticket. Worst movie of the year. Casting was a joke, SNL will do it better

Can I be clear I have nothing against Nolan or Oddysey. (Dunkirk in one of my favorite movies) but if people want to just roll out how massive it is when actually relatively in terms of tickets sold it probably would never get near top 100 movies… If that.. Then I don’t think there is anything wrong with providing an alternative opinion on its success. What happens next Nolan makes a movie and invites only the 5 richest people in the world to watch it at £250 million dollars a ticket…. Do we proclaim it a massive box office juggernaut… Or just inflated ticket prices.

Er… studios spend money to make movies. So they measure their return in how much money they generate. Same in any industry. I mean Ferrari doesn’t go around saying if only we could be a Toyota and sell the most cars in the world. They make cars for the premium market, etc, etc.
So Nolan only wants select customers then like Ferrari.?
Bingo. And that’s what he got. Same for John Leguizamo, but for a different reason.
Not to be snarky, but I also have nothing against James Cameron and the Avatar movies, and I think something similar happens to them. I believe this kind of reporting and most commentary around it relies only in revenue earnings. I read somewhere that Odyssey is not even yet considered profitable despite $600+M earned (worldwide), so there’s that too.
I have a feeling that a measure of tickets sold or even total views (across different media platforms) would show many other movies, even some not considered box office successes.
Remember all the people commenting that it wouldn’t even reach Oppenheimer numbers? Now it has done so in less than two weeks. So much for all the negative comments on how much it was going to make.
Of, they have now found out about inflation and audience numbers instead.
