The Sovetsky Soyuz class was a class of battleships begun by the Soviet Union but never brought into service. They were designed in response to the German Bismarck-class battleships, and would have rivaled the Imperial Japanese Yamato class and America's planned Montana class in size, although with significantly weaker firepower. Only four hulls of the fifteen originally planned had been laid down by 1940, when the decision was made to cut the program to only three ships to divert resources to an army-rearmament program. Construction of the first four ships was plagued with difficulties as the Soviet shipbuilding and related industries were not prepared to build such large ships. One battleship, Sovetskaya Belorussiya, was cancelled after serious construction flaws were found. Construction of the other three ships was suspended shortly after Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June1941. All three of the surviving hulls were scrapped in the late 1940s. (Fullarticle...)
... that in 2026, the Kandy Royals cricket team was acquired by a US-based investor and selected most of its roster through a player draft rather than a traditional auction?
Mõdriku is a village in Vinni Parish in Lääne-Viru County, northeastern Estonia. It is the location of Mõdriku Manor, a house that was first mentioned in 1470, and belonged to several Baltic-German families, including the family of the Russian general and explorer Alexander von Kaulbars. His ancestor R.A. von Kaulbars, reputedly a great patriot, put up the column commemorating the French invasion of Russia in 1812 that is still visible in the manor park. The building dates partly from the 17th century, with substantial alterations in the 1780s and 1890s. During the 20th century, it was used by various schools. This photograph shows the facade of Mõdriku Manor in 2012.
