Administrators' newsletter – May 2026
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2026).

Interface administrator changes
- Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
- The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).
- The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
- The May 2026 administrator elections are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions close on May 10.
- A new noticeboard for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions.

Please don't run around adding "annotated link" templates to see also sections
[edit]Short descriptions are intended for use in search result lists, to distinguish articles with similar names. They are usually entirely inappropriate in the context of "see also" sections. It's really unfortunate that WP:ALSO mentions the {{annotated link}} template, because it should, frankly, never be used for this purpose, and transclusion is not a good tool for any task where the same general type of text is needed in multiple substantially different contexts.
If you want to add annotations to a see also section, you can, but they must be appropriate for the specific context of the article where the see also section is. You should write these manually. Occasionally, there is a short description which works okay as an annotation; in such a case you can just copy/paste the short description as an annotation; copy/paste is better than transclusion, because there is no reason whatsoever to believe that a short description which is an appropriate annotation today will continue to be an appropriate annotation in the future – the criteria/context for a good description are completely different from the criteria/context for a see also annotation, and short descriptions are routinely changed from something substantially descriptive to something very vague but more concise. –jacobolus (t) 16:16, 16 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Jacobolus Right, I do see the template has certain drawbacks. Some short descriptions are too generic indeed. BorgQueen (talk) 16:41, 16 September 2026 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the time you spent doing a FA review on map. Your comments were especially insightful and helpful – it's clear you took a lot of care with the review. The article is drifting towards the bottom of the FA nomination list, so I'm sure the FAC coordinators will be looking to close the nomination soon. If you feel like you can provide a conclusion to your review, that may help the coordinators. Thanks again for the help you provided. Noleander (talk) 13:36, 30 September 2026 (UTC)

[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

- Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
- Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
- The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.
- Interface administrators no longer need to specify the
ResourceLoaderoption in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded throughResourceLoader. (T298199) - The
list=abusefiltersAPI module now supportsformatversion=2and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, theactionsproperty is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)
- The arbitration case Gun control 2 has been closed.
- Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.

2024 lead expansions
[edit]Hi - while going through articles I noticed several lead expansions you made in mid-to-late 2024 that read like AI. Were you using AI for edits at this time? Gnomingstuff (talk) 19:59, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Gnomingstuff Hi! I recall I was experimenting with Claude at that time, but I don't exactly recall if it was for lead expansions; it is entirely possible. I certainly didn't generate whole articles as some do. In any case, you're welcome to revert any of my edits as you deem necessary. I've been watching your work for a while and I believe you're doing a good work. Sorry for not being very helpful as I'm not as active these days. BorgQueen (talk) 20:29, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response! Just wanted to make sure, of course there was no restriction against that at the time (and it seems to be just leads). Gnomingstuff (talk) 20:42, 21 October 2026 (UTC)
