Great Rites Controversy
[edit]Here are my comments for the Great Rites:
- A family tree would be helpful. The members of the imperial family listed here are: Jiajing Emperor, Hongzhi Emperor, Lady Zhang, Zhu Youyuan, Lady Jiang, Zhengde Emperor, Lady Shou, Zhu Jianze, Zhu Houxuan, Zhu Yousi.
- "... the Ministry of Rites, 30 km outside Beijing". Can you give the exact city or location where the Ministry of Rites was?
- "At the beginning of 1522, he requested that his mother's title be further elevated by adding the character huang (皇) to her title, meaning 'empress' or 'august'." Is there any information about whether mothers of previous emperors had been titled using the character huang without having been imperial consorts (i.e., wives of reigning emperors)?
- "When the Jiajing Emperor's grandmother, Lady Shao, died in December 1522, Yang, despite the Emperor's wishes, decided that only one day of mourning should be observed for her." How long was the usual mourning period for an empress dowager?
- I'm not sure that the paragraph starting with "At the beginning of 1524" has anything to do with the Great Rites Controversy. I would personally remove it, but that's your decision.
- "Several days later, the Emperor was informed of two additional memoranda in support of his position". Who informed him?
- "The Emperor officially responded to Gui E's and the others' memoranda two weeks later." Did he reply both to his supporters and opponents?
- "On 15 March 1524, the Emperor accepted his resignation and dismissed him with all appropriate honors." The word appropriate sounds editorial. You might try the word customary instead.
- "After Yang's resignation, intense debate erupted in the Beijing government offices, accompanied by accusations of factionalism and references to the premature deaths of some opponents of Yang's faction in previous years." Are there any specific instances of these "premature deaths"? Did Yang have his opponents executed?
- "More than seventy supervisory secretaries and censors demanded the execution of the three men for having misled the Emperor." Are these Zhang Cong, Gui E, and Fang Xianfu?
- Provide Chinese characters for Minister of Justice Zhao Jian
- "Led by Yang Shen, they knelt for four hours and chanted the names of the Hongwu Emperor and the Hongzhi Emperor who regarded by officials as an exemplary ruler." This sentence is grammatically incorrect: was only one of these emperors regarded as exemplary, or were both?
