Hi Moonreach,

This is to let you know that File:Garni temple 2021 drone.jpg, a featured picture you nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for June 18, 2025. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2025-06-18. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! Oh hey, thanks! Moonreach (talk) 12:40, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

The Garni Temple is a classical colonnaded structure in the village of Garni, in central Armenia, around 30 km (19 mi) east of Yerevan. Built in the Ionic order, it is the best-known structure and symbol of pre-Christian Armenia. It has been described as the "easternmost building of the Greco-Roman world" and the only largely preserved Hellenistic building in the former Soviet Union. It is conventionally identified as a pagan temple built by King Tiridates I in the first century AD as a temple to the sun god Mihr (Mithra). It collapsed in a 1679 earthquake, but much of its fragments remained on the site. Renewed interest in the 19th century led to excavations in the early and mid-20th century. It was reconstructed in 1969–75, using the anastylosis technique. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Armenia and the central shrine of Hetanism (Armenian neopaganism). This aerial photograph shows the Garni Temple in the winter. Hi Moonreach,

This is to let you know that File:Joséphine Baker par Jean Chassaing.jpg, a featured picture you nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for June 3, 2026. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2026-06-03. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American and French dancer, singer, and actress. She was the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 French silent film Siren of the Tropics, directed by Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant. During her early career, Baker was among the most celebrated performers to headline the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris, and the most successful American entertainer in France. During World War II, Baker aided the French Resistance, and after the war, she was awarded the Resistance Medal by the French Committee of National Liberation, the Croix de Guerre by the French Armed Forces, and was named a chevalier of the Legion of Honour by General Charles de Gaulle. After the war, Baker supported the American civil rights movement, working with the NAACP and refusing to perform for segregated audiences. This 1931 lithographic poster, featuring a stylized depiction of Baker, was illustrated by Jean Chassaing; this copy is in the collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Barber chair, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Barbershop. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Alright, this is going to be difficult for me to deal with.

Here is my list of my last 100 uploads, and you may notice a good chunk of them are photo slides which I state to have acquired from EBay sellers. I've started my own private collection of photo slides of trains and locomotives, and I only uploaded a portion of it on Commons Wikimedia, because multiple Wikipedia pages for steam locomotives (like Canadian Pacific 1278, which is remembered for its 1995 firebox failure) had been sorely lacking in proper images to represent them. I had also asked one seller if the copyrights to these slides would simply be carried over with the slides if they're each the sole individual copies of certain images, and they responded that it possibly would be the case.

So to answer your question on that Featured Picture nomination, no, none of the sellers or original owners (who have likely passed away years ago, anyway) personally assigned any copyright licenses on Commons. I simply assumed I'd gain the copyrights if I got the slides (as long as there are no other copies in existence) and thought it was alright to upload some of them myself. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 16:27, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I should say upfront that I am not a lawyer and this information is not legal advice, but based on what I know, I have bad news. I don't know where you're based, but in the US that is not how copyright works - nor anywhere else, as far as I know, though I'm less certain. The right to possess a work of art and the copyright for the intellectual property vested in that art are two different things. Unless you received an explicit grant of copyright from the prior legal holder, you don't have it and therefore can't give it away.

There might be a loophole for images taken in or before 1987, if they were never copyrighted at publication, since you used to have to file copyright manually, but then you're getting into the weeds of having to prove when photographs were taken and also prove they were never published in a copyrighted form. Again, though, I'm not an expert, and you really want a lawyer for this. If I were you, I would find one of the Wikipedia portals and talk with people who know more than I do. I'm guessing you'll have to take at least some of the pictures down, and possibly all of them, but I don't know for sure. Moonreach (talk) 16:40, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'll find a professional user and forward them a link to this conversation. Hopefully, they'll confirm that loophole, at least. Thank you for the response. And also, yes, I am a US citizen, so this would very well apply to me. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 17:12, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I wish you good luck. Moonreach (talk) 17:43, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Your recent edit of the article USS Bear says that the ship served in the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American War. Actually, Bear was a commissioned cutter in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service during the Spanish-American War and was not acquired by the Navy until 1932. Commissioned by the Revenue Cutter Service in 1894 she served within that service until the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the United States Life Saving Service in 1915 forming the U.S. Coast Guard. The years of service with the Coast Guard ran from 1915 until 1926 when it was turned over to the city of Oakland, California. You should correct your edit to conform with the actual history of the ship. Cuprum17 (talk) 00:09, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

That is not my edit. My edit was about service in Antarctica. Moonreach (talk) 13:35, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Cuprum17 (talk) 13:41, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi MoonReach! I’m working on an educational science podcast about artificial cells and emergent science, and saw that you created the SpudCell Wikipedia page just hours after the announcement from Kate Adamala/article ran by the NYT. Would you be interested in talking with me a bit about your contributions to the page? I respect anonymity, so I am happy to set up a Jitsi call (and you can leave your camera off) or a written email interview. I would just love to hear how you are keeping up with science as it happens so rapidly! Would you let me know the best way to get in touch with you? Thank you! Icylaines (talk) 18:57, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for your interest. I'm afraid I have to decline your offer for an interview - I'm swamped with real-life work these days and in any case I prefer to be an invisible cog inside Wikipedia - but I can give you at least a little insight. I grew up reading Science News at the breakfast table, and it sort of baked into me the idea that the first thing you do when you wake up is check on the science world. I think I read about SpudCells in The New York Times first. When I went to Wikipedia, I was surprised to see there wasn't already a page, so I decided to jump on that. I don't know how much of an effect the article will have in the long run, but I like the idea that I'm able to help spread knowledge. Moonreach (talk) 13:56, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
