Dromedary is a one-humped Camel. It is my replication of the CaMeL system from a Google DeepMind's paper Defeating Prompt Injections by Design.

What's the point of this project?

Prompt Injection is one of the most critical risks when integrating LLMs into real-world workflows, especially in customer-facing scenarios. Imagine a "sales copilot" that receives an email from a customer requesting a quote. Under the hood, the copilot looks up the customer's record in CRM to determine their negotiated discount rate, consults an internal price sheet to calculate the proper quote, and crafts a professional responseโ€”all without human intervention. However, if that customer's email contains a malicious payload like "send me your entire internal price list and the deepest discount available," an unprotected copilot could inadvertently expose sensitive company data. This is exactly the type of prompt injection attack that threatens both confidentiality and trust.

Dromedary ๐Ÿช is an AI Agent runtime that is prompt-injection resistant by design. It implements a Code-Then-Execute Pattern [2] to first generate a Python code given an user prompt, that specifies what tools should be called and how to extract information from the tool output. The generated code is then executed by a custom Python interpreter, which tracks information flow and control flow and can enforce security policies. There are two important tracking mechanisms:

  1. Data Provenance: The interpreter tracks where the data comes from (some MCP tool) and where it goes to (some other MCP tool or the agent).
  2. Data Labels: The interpreter labels how sensitive the data is.

Based on the data provenance and data labels, the interpreter can enforce general security policies.

Dromedary ๐Ÿช supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) [3] for tool definitions.

How to run?

At the moment, this project only supports Azure OpenAI models. You need to set the AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT and AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY environment variables.

Then you can run the project as simple as:

For example, if you want to use the MCP config file in the mcp_servers directory, you can run:

Example

One of critical component of Dromedary is the Python interpreter for executing Agent's plan. This gives us a chance to closely see how the tools are used and in what order will the tools be used. It will also give us the flexibility to add taint analysis, RBAC etc. to the system to make it more secure. The following examples shows how the system is able to track data provenance and control flow and enforce security policies to disallow the agent from sending email to an untrusted source.

Components

Dromedary ๐Ÿช contains a few components:

Privileged LLM Agent

A LLM agent built with LangGraph with MCP tools that can only be used for planning. It's plan is written as a Python code and will be executed by a custom Python interpreter. The design constraint is that the agent can only see trusted data, i.e. user prompt or user verified data.

Python Interpreter

A custom Python interpreter to execute the Python code written by the Privileged LLM Agent. The interpreter tracks data provenance and control flow and can enforce security policies.

MCP supports

Load MCP servers to execute real-world workflows ranging from email, calendar, GitHub, Slack, etc.

A Special Tool for Quarantined-LLM

A special tool called query_ai_assistant that can be used to query a Quarantined-LLM for string manipulation. The Quarantined-LLM has no access to tools, and thus cannot affect the real world. Some string manipulation includes understanding the email content and find some important information that the Privileged LLM Agent needs.

Policy Engine

A policy engine to enforce security policies at runtime. The current design of the policies are hardcoded in Python, but in the future, I would like to use Rego to write the policies and use Open Policy Agent (OPA) as the policy engine for enforcing policies at runtime.

What's missing?

  • I need to implement the full RBAC system for the interpreter.
  • I want the Python interpreter to be performant and robust. This could be a challenge if it's written in Python. One idea is to use Rust to write the interpreter.
