Github Copilot has been slowing down steadily for the past month. I'm ready to cancel my subscription. Is this something the community has been seeing as well, or is it just me somehow? Prompts used to be answered immediately, and edits would take just just a couple seconds. I'm at the point now where I ask a query and go get a coffee, and hope it's been answered when I get back. What's the deal? I've tried all the models, all are slow.

Ok, today Claude 3.7 Sonnet is performing well enough. The other models are still 5-10 minute wait times.

Yeh it is extremely slow for me and it's frustrating. I used to get instant replies but now I have to wait a few minutes, it really stops your flow. Please fix this

Same here. It worked okay until last friday. Suddenly the answers in the chat window take forever. It breaks my concentration and I'd be faster looking things up for myself. Unusable...

I hope it gets fixed soon, I've come to like copilot. I am ready to cancel my subscription, if it's not fixed soon though. Pretty useless at the moment.

I paid & subscribed annually, shortly after my renewal you announced it's free in a more limited way...

It really appears you're not treating paying vs free customers differently in terms of speed which is really disappointing.

+1. Github Copilot Pro is becoming unbearably slow every passing month. The difference in autocomplete speed between Supermaven Free and Github Copilot Pro is embarrassing.

It has become unbearably slow; in edit mode, a single modification can take even 20-30 minutes to complete, and sometimes when the result finally appears, it is incorrect, or the file hasn't been modified at all, and I have to retry.
I feel like I can barely make a few code changes a day; yes, only a few, and that's not an exaggeration. It's a complete waste of my time, and the productivity is too low.
If it continues like this, I may have to cancel my subscription. I had been actively recommending Copilot to everyone, but now I've given up.

I guess the most likely reason most people experience a drastic slowdown is hitting quota... but as the quota reporting doesn't work at present (for me at least) it's hard to understand why everything slows so much. I took a punt an upgraded to Pro+ and for now it's back to an acceptable speed.

Copilot for me became basically unusable, forcing me to ditch it. Not only does it have answer times ranging in minutes, but it is unable to edit simple files. Despite having PRO+ with not-daily usage.

This developer at Cline did a root analysis and found that Gemini has gotten slower and less stable.

This could perhaps also affect GitHub Copilot

When using the sonnet 3.7 thinking.. in edit mode or agent (3.7)... then it continuously edits the code. for many iterations.. nothing but junk is added to the code.. and i get warning.. that AI is working for long..do you want to change the prompt.. i had to revert the changes it did..and try again.. this is a bug in Github copilot only..i use other platforms too.. there i did not face this issue.. Has anyone else noticed that since the recent updates, agent mode has become much less reliable? I'm seeing decreased accuracy, more frequent endless loops, and constant response errors.

yes, and in gpt 4.1 is refusing the write to file and act like in ask mode not in agent mode

I've just noticed this too. It's getting confused about what mode it's in, and it claims to have created files and made edits when nothing has been done.

Since going to paid subscription it has slowed to a crawl for me. It was so much faster as a free user but i hit a usage limit

The thing is super slow. Truly embarassing. I only started using it with a pro+ subscription 1 or 2 weeks ago and getting rid of it. It's not minutes, but about 30 seconds to get an answer back is not unusual. You can't have a "conversation" like this, you go insane trying to accomplish something. Other ones I use are literally instant regardless of model. Hit enter poof instant answer. This thing....... take a nap, come back for answer. Absurd. Who can actually use this and be productive and not pull their hair out? Support is nonexistent, very - extremely slow, junk.

BTW, for those of you trying to use Copilot from Visual Studio:
Try disabling your virus scanner to see if things are faster then. I am not kidding: I had a working copy, where a unittest with only a few, simple SQLite operations that usually ran for 3-4 seconds would take minutes (!) to finish. And when I disabled the virus scanner, not only would the SQLite unittest be back to normal, the copilot response times bounced back to 5-10 seconds. 😮

I've since moved my working copy to a devdrive and copilot has become usable again. (Not good - but usable and occasionally helpful ==> another topic).

So, seriously, it seems that Microsoft Defender can screw up big time and in my case seems to have been the culprit. Might be worth a try.

edit* I read the comment above me, switched off defender realtime and boom it started working. Am also writing unit tests

I use the github copilot chat within vs code and i'm not sure if this linked to the cause or coincidence but when i wipe my github copilot chat the speed returns to normal.
