Copilot Chat says it needs "additional authorization" in JetBrains IDE on MacOS

Recently Copilot Chat started showing a message indicating that it needs "additional authorization" and "You are logged in, but we need additional information to enable Copilot Chat." There is an "Authorize" button in the panel but it doesn't respond to clicks. I don't have this problem with Copilot Chat in the VSCode on the same machine nor in the JetBrains IDEs on a Windows machine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Copilot plugin, invalidating the caches in JetBrains, and finally uninstalling and reinstalling the JB IDEs themselves, without success. Any ideas on what to look at next?

Manually installing 1.5..35(-242) worked for me to fix this: https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/17718-github-copilot/versions/stable

Thanks for this. It didn't work for me (erroring on an IDE incompatibility) but it did lead me to the Copilot button at the bottom of the IDE where I was able to log out and then log in again, and that worked.

Thanks for this, had same problem but forgot that icon existed in the bottom. It would be nice to include a logout button from the settings page.

I can't believe that this is the soluton "Did you turn it Off and On?" no offence to github, but this is too low. You just can't do that.

I have this problem and logging out and back in to copilot only got the chat working, the Colpilot tab still says it is unavailable for the selected editor.

Also experiencing this issue on PHPStorm 2024.3.4 on maxOS Sonoma. It is unclear what "logging out" of CoPilot means in this context. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin as well as clearing caches. The Authorize button fails to respond to clicks.

What worked for me was to find the CoPilot button in the information tool bar of the JB IDE and log out from there.

Thank you @darrix - that was incredibly helpful. I did not have the status bar visible which made finding that button very tricky!

Logging out and reauthenticating worked perfectly.

This didn't work for me until I also signed out of github account on browser. The combo of signing out on browser and signing out through IDE copilot "log out" prompted new modal to sign in finally.

Log out of browser github account. > log out copilot using tool bar > sign in through IDE github copilot

Github copilot version I had problem with but finally worked after these steps was 1.5.40

@salokanto Try remove hosts.json and apps.json files see if it works, the files are located under ~/.config/github-copilot for Linux and macOS, or %LOCALAPPDATA%/github-copilot for Windows. Restart the IDE to login after removing the files.

I can confirm that this was fix for me.

BTW in the latest v1.5.44, the legacy hosts.json file will be automatically removed when you log out. So logout and login again can simply fix the issue. Hope this helps, in case anyone who is suffering from the same problem.
