That's great , Just never stop building that project, plan it design its workflow , and for your first early project dont ever use LLM to build the core design and critical stuff it should be designed by you yourself,
What are you planning to make that project into, I would say to one survey about your product first in your college, what pain points students have , since whatsapp and any existing app might be doing some work right ? , So in survey you may design any idea and get review about it, then when your product would be ready you can even host it into your college and get some real experience of code to production , handle real users :)

I'm a Statistics student navigating the space where heavy math meets scalable tech. My background is deeply rooted in data science, quantitative analysis, and cloud infrastructure. I spend a lot of time working with high-performance data processing tools (like Python, Pandas, and Polars) and getting hands-on with cloud-native infrastructure, specifically Kubernetes and GCP.
Right now, my time goes into building out two main projects:

• Cift Markets: A quant startup where I'm developing algorithmic trading suites and data intelligence architectures.
• FiTi Health: A deep-tech medical diagnostic tool. We're using edge-AI and behavioral metadata to analyze health risks, which has been an amazing challenge in privacy-first systems design.

What really drives my work is the concept of Zero UI. I'm incredibly inspired by the idea that the most powerful AI models and complex backend infrastructure should be completely invisible to the end user. I love the challenge of building systems that do heavy computational lifting in the background while keeping the user experience seamless and data fundamentally secure.

I also didnt had laptop when i started , I use to code in pen and paper , studied dsa in pen and paper itself, had good marks in exams too, and good grasp then people having laptops, you can also do wonders with just mobile phone,

But if possible get yourself a laptop from any market place where they sell second hands , they are really easy to get and sometimes very useful, get linux into it then you would really enjoy it,

What part of building apps has you most curious right now - the front end, the back end, or connecting the two? When I was starting out I loved the idea of creating something functional yet visually appealing 🎨

Find something you are passionate about and start small. If you want to contribute perhaps fix a bug and then try and help fix it. But don't worry if your first few contributions aren't accepted, keep trying, your effort will be noticed.

Hey everyone! I'm Rohit, a CS student from India, just hopped in here through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
Most of my time these days goes into DSA and competitive programming, but the more fun stuff is the projects — I build mostly in Python, with some React, Electron, and FastAPI thrown in when I want a project to actually look and feel like a product. Right now I'm dipping into Machine Learning, trying to get past the tutorial stage and build something that solves a real problem rather than just predicting house prices for the hundredth time.
If anyone's open to it, I'd love a second pair of eyes on my repos — brutal feedback welcome, I'd rather hear it now than later. Also genuinely curious: what's a project you built that taught you way more than you expected?
