Is IntelliJ Copilot MCP generally available? #168950
-
Select Topic AreaQuestion Copilot Feature AreaJetBrains & Xcode BodyHello, I'm looking forward to using Copilot MCP with IntelliJ. My company's rules state that I can't use it until it's generally available (GA). Is it correct to say that MCP is currently in a public preview? Agent Mode has reached GA, but I'm not sure if MCP has also reached GA. |

At the moment MCP on JetBrains (IntelliJ) is still in public preview and has not yet reached General Availability. |

As of now, GitHub Copilot’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) support in IntelliJ and other JetBrains IDEs is available in public preview but not yet generally available (GA). While MCP has reached GA status for Copilot Chat in Visual Studio Code, its implementation in IntelliJ, Eclipse, and Xcode remains in a preview phase. GitHub has not announced an official GA date for IntelliJ MCP support. Users can access the feature by updating to the latest Copilot plugin in their JetBrains IDE, but should be aware that changes may occur before final release. |

Is GitHub Copilot MCP (Multi-Platform Copilot) Generally Available (GA)?**
No, MCP is still in public preview** (as of July 2025).
Agent Mode (a separate feature) has reached GA, but MCP has not yet officially exited preview.
Confirmation from GitHub’s Announcement**
The [linked GitHub Changelog post](https://github.blog/changelog/2025-07-16-agent-mode-for-jetbrains-eclipse and-xcode-is-now-generally-available/) only confirms GA for Agent Mode, not MCP.
MCP remains in preview** for JetBrains (IntelliJ), Eclipse, and Xcode.
What This Means for Your Company’s Policy**
Since MCP is not GA, your company’s restrictions likely still apply.
