Hi @mdyao, This is expected behavior. The GitHub Education faculty coupon gives you GitHub Pro for free, but it does not include unlimited Copilot Chat. Here’s how it works: GitHub Pro (via the faculty coupon) includes Copilot access, but with a monthly message cap in Copilot Chat. Once you hit that cap, Copilot Chat will pause until the next monthly reset (e.g., September 1, 2025). If you want unlimited Copilot Chat, that requires a Copilot Pro subscription, which is separate from the Pro plan. So there’s nothing you need to re-link in VS Code — your coupon is active and working correctly. The message you’re seeing just means you’ve already reached the included monthly quota. 👉 Your options are: Wait until the reset date (the limit will refresh automatically). Upgrade to Copilot Pro if you need unlimited chat usage. If you believe your quota is being limited incorrectly (for example, if you haven’t used many requests this month), the best step is to open a ticket with GitHub Support |

This behavior is expected and is not an issue with account linking or VS Code. The GitHub Education or faculty coupon provides GitHub Pro benefits, which include access to Copilot, but Copilot Chat comes with a limited monthly message quota. Once this quota is reached, Copilot Chat is temporarily disabled until the next monthly reset date. There is no need to re-link or refresh your GitHub account in VS Code, as the coupon is already active and working correctly. Unlimited Copilot Chat is only available with a separate Copilot Pro subscription. If continued access is required, you can either wait for the monthly reset or upgrade to Copilot Pro. |

Even with GitHub Education, Copilot is not unlimited anymore. Your education coupon gives you Copilot Pro, but GitHub now applies monthly chat / premium request limits to everyone, including students. If you use Copilot Chat a lot in VS Code, you can still hit the monthly chat message limit. So: ✅ Your education benefit is applied ❌ Chat usage is still capped per month 🔄 It resets next month, or you’d need paid extra usage It’s not a bug — it’s how GitHub Copilot works now. |

I looked at the GitHub Community discussion you have open, and here’s the gist: Your faculty coupon does apply Copilot benefits to your GitHub account, but the message limit you’re seeing in VS Code Copilot Chat is a separate quota system. The coupon covers Copilot usage in editors (like VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim), but Copilot Chat has its own monthly cap unless you’re on Copilot Pro. That’s why you’re hitting the “Upgrade to Copilot Pro” message even though your coupon is active. 👉 In other words:
There’s no “re-link” or refresh needed — your account is already recognized. The limitation is simply because the coupon doesn’t extend unlimited chat messages. If you want unlimited Copilot Chat, you’d need Copilot Pro. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for the monthly reset (like the message says: September 1, 2025 in your case). Would you like me to break down the exact differences between Copilot (with faculty coupon) vs Copilot Pro in a quick comparison table so it’s crystal clear? |

The Short Answer Why This Is Confusing Previously, GitHub Education plans had unlimited Copilot access. GitHub has since changed their policy — now even Education users have a monthly chat message quota. Once you hit it, Copilot The key distinction:
What You Can Do
Nothing Is Broken
If You Think the Limit Is Wrong If you believe your quota was consumed incorrectly (e.g., you barely used it but still hit the cap), open a ticket at GitHub Technical Support to have them investigate your usage. |

Hello @mdyao the Issue: Why this is happening: The faculty coupon provides access to Copilot features but does not guarantee unlimited chat usage. How to resolve it: Wait for the monthly limit to reset (date mentioned in the message. optional: you can also use other intelligent code editors and AI tools available.(keep switching jisse imit nhi khatam hogia aur kisi ek tool par dependency bhi kam ho jayegi.Acha rahega! just a suggestion. |

Hello, Thank you for your response. I understand the explanation regarding the Copilot Chat message limits. However, I would like to clarify that I currently have an active faculty coupon applied to my GitHub account, and my GitHub profile confirms that the benefits are active. Despite this, in VS Code, GitHub Copilot Chat still shows that I have reached my monthly chat message limit and suggests upgrading to Copilot Pro. Could you please confirm whether:
I have already tried signing out and signing back in, but the issue still persists. I would appreciate your guidance on resolving this. Thank you for your support. Best regards, |

Hello, I have an active faculty coupon on my GitHub account, and my profile confirms the benefits are applied. However, in Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot Chat shows that I’ve reached my monthly limit and suggests upgrading or waiting for reset. Is there any step required to refresh or re-link my account between GitHub and VS Code? Thanks! Best regards, |

The behavior you’re seeing is correct, but the confusion comes from how GitHub now separates Copilot features. ✅ What your faculty coupon actually gives GitHub Pro benefits Copilot Chat (the chat panel in VS Code) Copilot Chat now has a separate monthly quota, even for GitHub Education/faculty accounts. Once you hit that limit, you’ll see the “upgrade to Copilot Pro” message until the next reset. 🔍 Why does this feel confusing Earlier, GitHub Education users had much more generous (almost unlimited) access. Now:
So your account is working fine — it’s just hitting the chat quota. 🛠️ What you can do
🚫 What will NOT fix it
These don’t affect the quota. 💡 Tip If your usage feels unusually low but you still hit the limit, then it’s worth contacting GitHub Support — otherwise, this is expected under the current Copilot policy. In short: |

This isn’t a linking issue — it’s a plan + quota mismatch between Copilot features. A simple way to understand it: 🧠 Think of Copilot as 2 separate services
Your GitHub Education/faculty benefit fully activates (1), but (2) is still rate-limited per month. 📌 What’s actually happening in your case Your coupon is correctly applied ✅ That’s why you see the upgrade/reset message. 🔑 Important detail most answers miss Even though both features appear inside VS Code, they are metered differently on GitHub’s backend. Autocomplete suggestions Only the chat panel gets blocked. ⚡ Practical workaround Instead of relying heavily on chat: Use inline prompts/comments (e.g., ✅ Final takeaway There is nothing broken or misconfigured. If you need uninterrupted chat access, that’s only available via Copilot Pro. |

I ran into the same thing, and it’s actually normal behavior. Even if you have a faculty coupon (GitHub Education), it doesn’t give unlimited Copilot Chat. It mainly gives you GitHub Pro and access to Copilot features, but the chat feature in VS Code has its own monthly limit. So in your case, nothing is broken: Your GitHub account is linked correctly That’s why it’s asking you to upgrade or wait. There’s no need to re-link or refresh anything. Once the limit resets (usually next month), chat will start working again. If you need more usage right now, the only option is upgrading to Copilot Pro. Otherwise, you can still use Copilot suggestions in the editor — only the chat gets restricted. |

Hi, This can sometimes happen when VSCode has not fully refreshed your GitHub account permissions after the faculty coupon was applied. A few things you can try:
Sometimes the Copilot quota information is cached locally in VSCode, so re-authenticating usually fixes it. If the issue continues after reconnecting, it may be a backend syncing issue between GitHub Education benefits and Copilot services. In that case, you’ll likely need GitHub Support to refresh the entitlement on their side. It may also help to attach:
Hope this helps! |

Hi, If your GitHub account shows that a faculty coupon is active, then GitHub Copilot Pro benefits should normally be available on that account. Faculty and verified educator benefits are intended to provide Copilot access without the Free-plan chat limits. A few things to check:
This may be an account entitlement synchronization issue between GitHub and the VS Code Copilot extension rather than a usage-limit issue. Thanks! |

Yes that's true
Education plan gives you GitHub pro which has a limited number of requests, once you hit the limit (and you will do it fast) Copilot will you disabled till the next month.
You can take extra requests but you will need to pay 0.04 USD for each request.
last month we had unlimited access but now everything is changed
