I can confirm the same exact issue has occurred as well. My guess is that something wrong with their backend server. I had one instance that is working half way, then suddenly it cannot fetch the job ID. It did able to complete the task, but not able to report anything to the interface, and got stuck in starting playright server. This happened at exactly 9 hours ago. Notably, the agent was able to fetch the job and complete the task, but could not communicate completion status to the backend. This suggests the backend API update (or outage) took place after the job began. It appears this is not an isolated runner or configuration issue—suggesting a critical problem in Copilot’s backend job reporting infrastructure, affecting everyone. It would be worthwhile for the engineering team to closely review their backend update and deployment processes to prevent similar disruptions. After that run, it could no longer launch with the exact issue that the OP has mentioned. Another thing I have noticed is that the previous version runs with no problem have Launcher Version of:

Same issue here, even with self-hosted runners. One small repo is working with a single bash script, but copilot is very retarded and burning lots of premium requests, like in 8 sessions · 10 premium requests didn't followed the instructions. |

Anyone has any ideas what is GitHub's policy on premium requests lost to issues clearly caused by their lack of testers? At some point I tried cursor and if I remember correctly, they didnt charge for failed requests. This could've changed though so no idea. |

I’m seeing the same issue and it looks like a Copilot Agent runtime regression rather than a repo- or firewall-related problem. Two days ago the “Issue → assign @copilot → automatic PR” flow worked fine. The only change I can spot in logs is the runtime bundle:
Both runs use Node v22.21.1, so the problem likely sits in the newer runtime’s undici/WebSocket layer. Errors repeat during job detail fetch and callbacks: Side effects after the failures sometimes include:
Network/firewall seems unlikely: the action tarball downloads successfully and git push typically succeeds. Environment is GitHub-hosted runner (Ubuntu 24.04, runner v2.329.0), default branch main. Request: Until a permanent fix is rolled out, please rollback the Copilot Agent to the last known good runtime (runtime-e9c246e…). Alternatively, provide a way to pin/override the runtime (or a stable channel) for the UI-triggered Copilot runs. If a platform-level mitigation is needed, temporarily routing Copilot runs to a more stable base image (e.g., ubuntu-22.04) could also help, but the primary ask is a runtime rollback. If others can +1 with their runtime IDs and errors, it may help visibility. Thanks in advance. |

This is rather unprofessional. A feature that is highly advertised, and its core functionality is unusable, without proper investigation or response after almost 24 hours since rollout is a bit absurd. It is interesting that it seems like their team has not tested the core functionality after rollout, nor someone noticed that after this long. This sounds like a perfect plan to push users to develop a community version of it in the future. |

As flagged by a number of people in this discussion 💜, it seems that the problem only affects repositories with the agent firewall disabled. As a temporary workaround, you can re-enable the firewall in the repository's settings in the Copilot -> Coding agent section. (This won't work if you're using self-hosted runners, as they require the firewall to be disabled.) I will update here when the fix is deployed and we've confirmed that everything is working as normal. Update: 2025-11-12 09:57 UTCWe have rolled out and validated a fix, and everything is working as normal. Thanks for your patience with us 🙏! The issue only affected a very small percentage of users, because most people keep the agent firewall enabled. But that isn't an excuse - we give you the ability to turn the firewall off, and it's our responsibility to make sure that works. We'll be looking at our automated testing and monitoring to stop this happening again in the future. |

@timrogers Thanks for the update and for confirming that the issue has been resolved. As @maurovanetti pointed out earlier, the real frustration wasn’t primarily the bug itself, we all understand that software issues can occur. The problem was the absence of communication and visibility around it. It took more than a full day before there was any acknowledgment from GitHub, during which time many of us continued to run workflows, re-configure repositories, and exhaust troubleshooting steps in the belief that the problem was on our end. For a product that consumes paid Copilot requests and operates as part of automated pipelines, that silence carried a tangible cost: not just in time, but in wasted resources. It’s entirely understandable that incidents happen, but when they do, early communication makes all the difference. Even a short notice on the status page, or a brief pinned comment here, would have immediately saved users significant debugging effort and prevented unnecessary system strain. The technical fix is appreciated, and it’s good to hear the team is reviewing testing and monitoring processes. I would strongly encourage also reviewing incident communication workflows to ensure users are promptly informed when an outage or regression is identified. That kind of transparency builds far more confidence than silence ever can. Also I guess I should probably open a new discussion regarding "GitHub should refund failed premium requests" |
