About Shengyuan
Before I became a software engineer, I was chasing a different dream: filmmaking. I spent high school building a YouTube channel, not for fame, but for the love of storytelling. That passion for creative expression stuck with me, even as my interests shifted.
During the pandemic, I started exploring UI design, just to sharpen my Photoshop skills. When I shared a mockup online and people asked me to build it, I felt the same rush I used to get from posting a video. That moment sparked my journey into tech.
At UC Irvine, I initially struggled. Coming from a small school in rural Ohio, I felt behind compared to peers with years of coding experience. But I kept pushing, eventually landing an internship at Zoom before my sophomore year.
I later became a GitHub Campus Expert to help others break into tech, especially those from non-traditional backgrounds. Hosting resume reviews, mock interviews, and workshops became my new form of creative expression. Seeing students succeed showed me the impact of mentorship.
For me, creativity is not tied to one medium. It is about building, solving, and empowering. Whether through code or community, I am driven by the joy of helping others take their next step.
